Mario Kart Tour is addressing two big player complaints in its new update — adding landscape mode orientation, alongside portrait mode, as well as alternate game controls.

The update launches tomorrow, July 21. If you’ve not played Mario Kart on iOS for a while, it may be worth checking out this update to see how much these transform the overall gaming experience. Check out the trailer for the update below.

Mario Kart Tour launched on iPhone and iPad in September 2019. Since then, it has proven to be a massive money-spinner for Nintendo in both downloads and spending on in-app purchases. According to Apple, it was the most downloaded App Store game of 2019.

Along the way, Nintendo has done a great job of tweaking the game so that it remains fresh. These include regular additions of new tracks, characters, and modes. Many of these are available only for a short time, meaning that you need to keep playing to experience everything the game has to offer.

But there have been some major lasting changes, too. In March, Nintendo introduced a multiplayer mode for all players (rather than just an initial few for the beta.) In May, it added a new Team Races mode. This lets players form into four separate teams for races. Now, with landscape orientation and new controls, it’s another seismic shift for the way Mario Kart Tour is played.

Not tried Mario Kart Tour yet? You can download it for free from the App Store. While the game does include in-app purchases, these aren’t necessary for you to enjoy the cartoony racing action.
