TikTok may be facing a possible extinction-level event in the U.S., but that’s not stopping its worldwide success as the popular video-sharing app just racked up yet another month as the world’s most downloaded social media app.

According to analytics firm Sensor Tower, TikTok enjoyed 63.4 million installs worldwide in August 2020. That’s up 1.7 percent from August the previous year. TikTok was the no. 1 social media app in the App Store, Google Play store, and — unsurprisingly — both combined.

Indonesia and Brazil made up the two top markets for TikTok in the month, representing 11 percent and 9 percent of downloads respectively. Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and Pinterest rounded out the top five social media apps in the App Store.

TikTok: A challenging year so far

To say that TikTok has had a mixed 2020 (in the U.S., at least) would be an understatement. In the first quarter of the year, TikTok registered the best three months of any app ever when it comes to downloads. Month after month it has topped the download lists, and enjoys upward of 100 million users in the U.S. alone.

But then came President Trump’s executive order challenging the app for alleged security infractions. It is also reportedly being examined by the Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department for breaching an agreement regarding child-privacy protections. TikTok’s CEO Kevin Mayer resigned in August after just three months at the helm. He blamed the “political environment” for his decision to step down.

In the latest twist, a Washington judge has blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to ban the app in the United States. This ban would have gone into effect at 11:59pm this past Sunday. TikTok now has a stay of execution until at least November.
