Apple’s smart keyboard cover for the iPad could get a major design upgrade in 2020.

Digitimes reported today that Apple may release an updated keyboard for the tablets featuring the new scissor-switch design that resolved Apple’s keyboard woes on the last few generations of MacBook Pros.

According to Digitimes report, Apple’s new keyboard for the iPad will also feature “glowing” keys. We take that to mean they’ll be backlit like the rest of the MacBook keyboards. The report also claims a 13-inch MacBook Pro with the new scissor keyboard will be out in the first half of 2020.

iPad’s scissor-switch upgrade

The current iPad smart cover keyboards use a rubber-dome design that’s different from the butterfly-switch keyboards that were loathed by many MacBook Pro owners.

Apple introduced its scissor-switch keyboard design at the end of 2019 with the 16-inch MacBook Pro. Other MacBooks are expected to get the keyboard in 2020. Adding it to the iPad keyboard cases would give users keys with more travel for tactile feedback. There are plenty of third-party keyboard attachments already that make the iPad Pro look and feel like a MacBook keyboard.

It should be noted that Digitimes has a mixed track record when it comes to predicting the timing of unreleased Apple products. Ming Chi-Kuo claimed in a 2019 report that Apple would stick with its old keyboard design for the 2020 iPad lineup.
