Samsung secures latest pocket-sized SSD with built-in fingerprint scanner

CES 2020The Samsung T7 Touch goes the extra mile in security. This portable Solid State Drive (SSD) is available in sizes up to 2TB, but its signature feature is an integrated fingerprint scanner, so it can be unlocked with the press of a finger.

It was unveiled this morning at CES 2020.

“Consumers who are constantly on the go between work, play and passion projects want to be able to securely carry their content with them,” said Dr. Mike Mang, VP of Brand Product Biz Team, Memory Business at Samsung Electronics. “Now their data is secure thanks to the fingerprint recognition functionality incorporated into the product, which delivers industry-leading transfer speeds in a compact form factor.”

The T7 Touch is Mac compatible, and includes a USB-C port with USB 3.2 Gen 2. It offers read speeds of up to 1,050 MB/s and write speeds of 1,000 MB/s.

The fingerprint scanner is located on the top of the SSD. For extra security, the drive has AES 256-bit hardware encryption. And it can be password protected.

The T7 Touch is designed to be pocketable and weighs 2 ounces (58g). Still, it can survive drops up to 2 meters.

It was an Honoree in the CES 2020 Innovation Awards in the Computer Peripherals & Accessories category.

The Samsung T7 Touch debuts later this month. It will cost of $129.99 for the 500GB version, $229.99 for the 1TB one and $399.99 for the 2TB model.
