Blackmagic eGPU units now play nicely with Apple’s new Pro Display XDR following a firmware update. The version 1.2 release is available now for both the Blackmagic and Blackmagic Pro.

Apple states on its website that Pro Display XDR is compatible with any Mac connected to a Blackmagic eGPU over Thunderbolt 3. And users have been reporting that this setup works just fine.

Nevertheless, it seems a firmware update was necessary for complete compatibility. And you can get your hands on it today.

Update your Blackmagic eGPU for Pro Display XDR

Blackmagic and Blackmagic Pro owners should be able to download the version 1.2 release immediately.

“This update adds support for Apple Pro Display XDR to the Blackmagic eGPU and Blackmagic eGPU Pro,” reads the release notes.

“Once the update has been installed, you’ll be able to use Apple Pro Display XDR as a computer display when connected to a Mac with Thunderbolt 3 and either a Blackmagic eGPU or eGPU Pro.”

It’s not clear why this firmware is required, given that Pro Display XDR did already work with Blackmagic eGPUs. But perhaps some users ran into bugs that needed ironing out.

Whatever the case may be, we recommend you update to the latest firmware when possible.
