Shows like The Morning Show have been hits. But Apple has to build them from the ground-up.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association today revealed that Apple original The Morning Show has been nominated for multiple Golden Globes, including best television drama series.

The news comes hours after the Critics’ Choice Awards nominated Billy Crudup, who plays Cory Ellison in The Morning Show, as the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

When it comes to The Morning Show, TV critics couldn’t have been more wrong. Despite their disdain for Apple’s flagship show — which one reviewer called a “painful belly flop” — the series has quickly become a smash hit with Apple TV+ subscribers.

And it turns out we’re not the only ones who think Apple’s originals are turning out to be pretty great. Awards associations are also recognizing them, with The Morning Show in particular doing well this season.

The Morning Show nominated for best TV drama

After one of its stars was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award, The Morning Show has been selected for multiple Golden Globes. The show is up for best TV drama, alongside Big Little Lies, The Crown, Killing Eve, and Succession.

In a press release, Apple called the nominations historic. Cupertino noted that Apple TV+ became the “first streaming service to earn nominations in its launch year.”

“Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for today’s historic nominations,” said Zack Van Amburg, Apple’s head of worldwide video. “After the debut of Apple TV+ just last month, today’s nominations are a true testament to the powerful storytelling that went into The Morning Show, as well as all of our Apple Originals.”

Both Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, who star as The Morning Show’s “complicated women working to navigate the minefield of high-octane jobs while facing crises in both their personal and professional lives,” are also up for best performance by an actress in a TV drama. Their competition includes Olivia Coleman, Jodie Comer and Nicole Kidman.

The Morning Show received three Golden Globes nominations. That puts Apple ahead of Showtime, BBC America and USA Network in total nominations.

Netflix on top again

Netflix is, rather unsurprisingly, at the top of the list with 17 nominations. Its newest hit, The Irishman, is up for best motion picture, alongside The Two Ropes, another Netflix original.

HBO has earned the second-most number of nominations in the TV categories, with 15 in total. Hulu and Amazon Prime Video both picked up six, while FX Networks narrowly beat Apple with four.

The season finale of The Morning Show becomes available December 20. (Apple already renewed the show for a second season.) We’ll find out whether The Morning Show takes home any Golden Globes on January 5, 2020.
