Apple TV 4K users lose Dolby Vision for Apple TV+ content

Some Apple TV 4K owners are reporting that they can no longer enjoy Apple TV+ content in Dolby Vision.

Titles like The Morning Show and See are still available in standard HDR. But even earlier episodes, which were available with Dolby Vision initially, can no longer be watched in the enhanced format.

What is Dolby Vision?

Dolby Vision is an advanced form of HDR that is integrated into modern TV sets — particularly high-end models. Unlike standard HDR and HDR10, which are free for manufacturers to use, it must be licensed from Dolby.

What makes Dolby Vision so special — and the reason why manufacturers pay to license it — is that it uses dynamic metadata that compatible TVs can use to display content as accurately as possible.

What’s more, the data can be updated on a scene-by-scene or even frame-by-frame basis. So the image you see is constantly fine-tuned and adapted to what’s on screen. That’s not possible with standard HDR.

You can enjoy Dolby Vision on Apple TV 4K — assuming you have a compatible set. But for some reason, it is no longer available with TV+ content for some users.

Dolby Vision disappears from Apple TV+

Some started reporting in late November that Dolby Vision was disappearing from Apple Originals. And more and more subscribers have been seeing the same in recent weeks.

“I don’t know if it’s just me but today on my Apple TV 4K when I watch an Apple TV+ show (See and Morning Show) it’s in HDR instead of Dolby Vision,” tweeted @Djems94. “Used to work fine.”

Even previous episodes of these shows, which were initially available in Dolby Vision, now offer standard HDR only. Other shows, like Dickinson, are yet to be downgraded.

Just a bug?

It’s not clear why Dolby Vision is disappearing from some TV+ shows. Some suggest it is an Apple TV bug, while others believe there may be an issue with Dolby Vision itself that Apple is ironing out.

This is just speculation for now, however. Apple is yet to acknowledge the problem publicly and it is not currently responding to requests for comment on this matter. We’ll update this post if we get one.

Are you still able to enjoy Apple Originals in Dolby Vision on Apple TV 4K?
