Some of the world’s top handbag designers feel strongly that your AirPods case could use a little help.
Purses for AirPods appear to be a growing sector of the fashion accessories market and all the big names are in it, like Gucci, Dior, Bottega and Louis Vuitton to name a few.
Fashion blogs announce the new arrivals as they drop and even suggest they make great stocking stuffers, albeit pricey ones.
“Remember the days when the Twitterverse was joking about the price tag of AirPods themselves? Much, much simpler times,” Ali Webb and Margaux Bang wrote for the Paris-based fashion news site L’Officiiel about a “Very Luxe” AirPods case by Bulgari that retails for $680.
Designer AirPods cases for all tastes
The Bulgari case may be a smarter buy than others. Unlike some styles, this one appears to be able to fit the case for AirPods Pro, which has a much different shape than the rounded-square charging case of the first two generations of AirPods.
Some, like the Bulgari case, doubles as a necklace. Others have a stylish carabiner so it can be carried as a keychain or attach to a loop on a purse or backpack.
Whether they’re must-have in the eyes of fashion writers, is not so clear. Webb and Bang closed their article on the Bulgari case by saying, “It’s basically a gag gift and something actually nice all in one. Have fun!”
Adding to our ubiquitous devices a custom or luxury touch is nothing new. The prices on the designer case, which can range from just under $100 to north of $500, aren’t even all that shocking when you can spend tens of thousands of dollars on a gold-plated iPhone trimmed with diamonds.
Several accessory companies, perhaps reacting to consumers who find the white plastic case too vanilla, offer AirPods cases and, as Cult of Mac wrote this week, there is a sizable community of crafts who crochet cutesy covers for Air Pods cases.
“Suddenly, it seems that all of our favorite designers are making teeny, tiny homes for our most prized tech accessory,” wrote Kaitlin Serio for purseblog.
