Satechi just introduced an adapter that enables a MacBook to connect to a pair of 4K monitors, both running at 60Hz.

There is a drawback, though: this dual HDMI adapter requires two of the laptop’s USB-C ports.

Two 4K HDMI monitors with one adapter

Anyone who’s serious about multitasking wants multiple external monitors, and this hub enables that.

For devices that have just two USB-C ports, Satechi’s accessory includes a 60W charging port that also uses USB-C, so the MacBook’s charging cable can be used while the monitors are plugged in.

So much is going on in this item that he manufacturer warns “We recommend using the included silicone cover when running 4K 60Hz HDMI displays and power, as the adapter may get hot during use.”

Also, it seems some macOS computers aren‘t fully up to the job of driving a pair of monitors at this resolution and refresh rate. “Depending on the computer’s technical specifications, streaming at 4K 60Hz for extended periods of time may cause a slight lag in video output,” said Satechi.

This dual-monitor adapter works with the 2019/2018 MacBook Pro, 2018 MacBook Air, and 2018 Mac Mini. If it isn’t obvious, this product does not support MacBook models with just a single USB-C port.

The Satechi Aluminum Type-C Dual HDMI Adapter is available today for $64.99.

Two 4K HDMI monitors — and more — with one adapter

Satechi’s adapter that can drive two 4K monitors at 60Hz has no other ports. Video takes up so much bandwidth that it’s not possible to also include USB-A ports.

However, company also just introduced the Type-C Dual Multimedia Adapter that can drive a pair of 4K HDMI monitors and also includes gigabit Ethernet, microSD and SD card readers and two USB 3.0 ports.

The drawback is that one of the monitors maxes out at 30Hz. The other still runs at 60Hz, however.

It also requires a MacBook with a pair of USB-C ports, but this hub has its own USB-C port for charging.

Satechi is asking $109.99 for its Type-C Dual Multimedia Adapter, and the “DUALDISPLAY” coupon applies to it as well.
