Apple recalled 15-inch MacBook Pros from 2015, and we now know this is based on just a couple of dozen incidents, none serious.
Still, everyone with an affected unit should bring it in for service, especially as this includes a free battery replacement.
MacBook Pro recall
Apple announced this recall last week, and now the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) revealed additional details.
According to this commission,
“Apple has received 26 reports of the laptop’s battery overheating, including five reports of minor burns and one report of smoke inhalation, as well as 17 reports of minor damage to nearby personal property.”
We don’t know exactly how many notebooks are involved in the recall, but it’s every 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro from the series that debuted in mid-2015. Apple sold about 20 million laptops of all types that year, so 26 is surely a minuscule percentage.
Still, any recall is a black eye for a company. Especially as these same MacBooks are troubled with keyboard problems.
Get a new MacBook battery for free
Nevertheless, both Apple and the CPSC urge owners of any unit included in this recall to stop using it and get the device to an Apple Store (or an Authorized Service Provider) for a battery replacement. This will be done free of charge.
This could add years to the usability of the MacBook as batteries inevitably wear out with cycles of charging and discharging.
