Apple is now inviting some 15-inch MacBook Pro owners to return their machines for a battery replacement.
The company says some aging units “contain a battery that may overheat and pose a safety risk.” The problem affects machines sold primarily between September 2015 and February 2017.
Apple is asking customers to stop using their MacBook Pro if it is eligible for a free battery replacement.
Only a “limited number” of older 15-inch MacBook Pro units are affected, Apple says — despite the rather large period during which these machines were sold.
You can find out if your machine is at risk by visiting Apple’s new recall page and entering your computer’s serial number.
You’ll get a new battery for free
You can find your serial number by clicking the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen, then choosing About This Mac. If your machine isn’t listed as “MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)” you don’t need to worry.
If you do have an affected MacBook Pro, Apple asks you to stop using it and return it to the Apple Store (or an Authorized Service Provider) for a battery replacement. You won’t have to pay a penny for it.
Apple insists the problem “does not affect any other 15-inch MacBook Pro units or other Mac notebooks.”
