The camera in this year’s more affordable iPhone XR replacement could be as good as the one in last year’s flagship model, if a new report turns out to be correct.
This might be the most significant change in the upcoming version of Apple’s most popular handset.
Two is better than one
The current iPhone XR has a single 12MP wide-angle lens. Citing sources in Apple’s Asia supply chain, MacOtakara says the replacement — possibly called the iPhone 11R — will have both a wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens.
If that sounds familiar, it’s because each of the 2018 iPhone XS series models have that lens arrangement. But the replacements for these handsets are supposedly getting their own camera upgrades. Numerous rumors point to an iPhone 11 and 11 Max sporting triple-lens cameras, with the third a super-wide-angle lens.
And MacOtakara says all three of the 2019 iOS handsets will share two of the same cameras “to lower the price.”
The three lenses in the iPhone 11 flagship models will supposedly sit in a raised area molded into the back glass, and the 11R may use a similar arrangement.
Other 2019 iPhone rumors
Multiple unconfirmed sources indicate that all this year’s iOS handsets will have the same screen types and sizes as the 2018 models: a 6.5-inch OLED, a 6.1-inch LCD and a 5.8-inch OLED. And this could continue for some time. It’s not clear how Apple could make a pocket-size iPhone larger than 6.5 inches without including a folding screen.
Beyond displays, Apple’s 2019 offerings will supposedly be able to wirelessly share power with another device, whether an Apple Watch or another Qi-enabled phone. An Apple A13 processor is widely expected, but 5G support isn’t likely until 2020.
