There are dozens of ways to write on iOS. Apple’s own Notes app offers a simple writing platform, while Pages allows for elaborate documents – complete with pictures. What is iA Writer?
iA Writer is a plain text editor for iOS and Mac (there’s an Android and Windows version, too). Designed to help minimize distractions, the app features a clean, buttonless interface while you’re writing. The iOS app allows you to sync your documents over iCloud, and also supports creating or editing files from other cloud storage services through the Files app.

Another great feature of iA Writer is syntax highlighting. Unlike some plain text apps, iA Writer highlights English language syntax (nouns, verbs, adjectives etc.) to help keep your writing clear and accurate. Markdown formatting and highlighting add additional clarity to help you stay focused on your writing.
Another worthwhile feature of iA Writer is the rich text previewer. This allows you to quickly view your markdown with headings, bold or italic styles, and links. Documents can also be exported from iA Writer as html, Microsoft Word (.docx), PDF, or sent directly to WordPress or Medium.
Who it’s for
Anyone doing frequent, focused writing can benefit from iA Writer. While it isn’t a complex word processor for media-rich documents, it is great for bloggers or journalists looking to write in a more simple format.
