If you’re a fan of EDM (that’s “electronic dance music” for the older Cult of Mac readers out there!), Apple Music is about to become your best option for streaming music — courtesy of a new deal Apple has signed that will let it bring thousands of rare DJ mash-ups, remixes, and mixtapes to its subscription music service.

The deal between Apple and Dubset Media Holdings will use the latter’s technology to unpick the incredibly complex subject of how to go about licensing and paying royalties for dance music where a single mix might have upwards of 600 different rights holders.

A bit like a more complex version of Shazam, which Apple now bakes into Siri, Apple’s deal will allow submitted music to be run through Dubset’s MixBank software to find the likely source of each sample used. 60-minute files takes around 15 minutes to process, after which it sounds like they’ll then be given permission for uploading on Apple Music.

“Remixes are a huge part of our culture - they allow DJs and fans to put our own creative spin on music,” says DJ Steve Aoki. “Apple working with Dubset now is a really simple solution to something traditionally complex, and allows everyone to make money on this content for the first time.”

Pretty neat, huh? Especially taken alongside the arrival of house music producer Deadmau5 on Beats 1.
