Apple leapfrogged the desktop competition last year with the 5K Retina iMac, but according to its display partner LG, Apple is going to announce an is going to release an ‘iMac 8k’ later this year.

The Korean display manufacturer published an explainer on its website last week claiming a super-high resolution iMac will be hitting stores later this year. It’s probably just an error or typo, but the comments have led to a lot of speculation among Apple fanboys on Reddit.

Here’s the full quote from LG:

“It has become clear that Japan is planning to launch an 8K SHV test broadcast and then promptly restructure the UHD service. Apple has also announced that they will release the ‘iMac 8K’ with a super-high resolution display later this year. Korea is also preparing to offer an 8K service demonstration at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. LG Display displayed a new beacon of the 8K era by revealing their 98-inch 8K Color Prime Ultra HDTV at CES 2015.”

Making the jump to 5K and then 8K within 12 months would be a huge feat for Apple. There’s even less content for 8K displays than 4K displays. LG can barely even make a 8K display smaller than 55-inches, so unless Apple really is making a TV/Computer, I doubt we’ll be seeing 8K iMacs any year soon.
