Thanko Reminds Us Why The iPhone Has No Optical Zoom

Ever wonder what your iPhone might look like if Apple decided to add a zoom lens? Then take a look at Thanko’s Appollo 2, a crapware camera with a massive 30x schnozz on the front.

The big thing about an optical zoom is that it requires optics, and Apple is never going to fatten up the iPhone just to make space for some extra glass. We’ll have to make do with Olloclips and other add-on lenses instead, which is kind of what you’re supposed to do. The slab-like iPhone is like the multi-purpose core which fits into any case or widget and becomes what you need it to be at the time.

So it’d be neat if Thanko made a case with a giant zoom in it. Or would it? Here’s the picture of that zoom in action, plucked right from the product page:

Ugh, amirite?

Still, should you want such a thing, you could always just buy Thanko’s camera and slurp the photos into your iPad using your camera connection kit and enjoy all 12 megapixels of blurry, vignetted crap. You won’t even have to run these things through Instagram to ruin them.

The price for this magical machine? ¥19,800, or $200.
