Cricket Announces Prepaid iPhone 5 Availability From September 28

Cricket has become the iPhone 5’s first prepaid carrier after announcing today that it will be stocking Apple’s latest smartphone in “select Cricket markets” from September 28. That’s a week after the device launches on AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, but it’ll be worth the wait if you’re determined to avoid a lengthy contract.

Unfortunately, Cricket has not given us a price for the iPhone 5, or said whether the handset will be available to pre-order before the 28th. But you can expect it to cost around the same as an unlocked iPhone 5.

As it’s Cricket, you can look forward to an “unlimited” plan that offers up to 2.3GB of data, and unlimited calls and texts each month for $55.

Back in May, Cricket announced it would become the first prepaid iPhone carrier in the United States, but its exclusivity didn’t last long. Virgin Mobile later began offering the device, and so did Straight Talk. With that said, we have a feeling Cricket won’t be the only carrier launching a prepaid iPhone 5 in the coming weeks.
