One of the overlooked iPhone 4S features in today’s keynote was the fact that Apple’s newest smartphone boasts Bluetooth 4.0 technology. The latest MacBook Air and Mac Mini models also have Bluetooth 4.0.

Apple’s technical specifications for the iPhone 4S note that the device has built-in Bluetooth 4.0 support.

Bluetooth 4.0 would theoretically allow the iPhone 4S to connect to the new MacBook Airs and Mac Minis from up to 50 meters away. Bluetooth 4.0 also boasts incredibly low power consumption.

When more accessories and peripherals are updated to Bluetooth 4.0 status, there will likely be tons of apps and hardware that will use the technology on the iPhone 4S. Health, security, and over proximity-sensitive peripherals will be able to take advantage of Bluetooth 4.0 with the iPhone 4S. This also means that Bluetooth headsets will become more battery efficient.
