great video. What softwear do you use for screen casting?

  2. Michael Steeber says:

    Screenflow.

  3. Jeff Bernard says:

    ,but either way,

This is not parenthetical and should not be enclosed with commas. My english professor would not be pleased.

    Thanks for the tips…

  5. mailorders says:

You may want to mention to readers/viewers, that when you change the size of the icons in the left column, it also changes the sizes of the icons in the left column of Mail.

    Screenflow…..

I just got a $829.99 iPad2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HDTV for only $251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prices at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HDTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for.
    I use BIDFiRsT. COM

A useful tip for the Finder sidebar also, is that you can drag most of the things in the DEVICES section up into FAVORITES. Take the Macintosh HD and your external drives and put them up there. You can then uncheck the other devices, like the the iDisk and perhaps your computer’s name if you want a simple sidebar for only viewing your favorite items. You’ll notice that in the Finder Preferences there’s a halv checkbox for the Macintosh HD and external drives if you do this and if you then fully check it the Macintosh HD pops back into the DEVICES section essentially recreating it if disabled. Your Macintosh HD icon appears two places if you decide to leave it at the that. Use CMD to drag out drives as you would normally with other folders.

I hope this is a useful tip. If shared earlier in another story then disregard this entry.

Thanks for the tips.  As a new Mac user having the path on in Finder is really useful while I try and find out where some of my files live!

    Another tip…
A third way to remove icons from the sidebar is to drag the icon off the sidebar while holding the Cmd key.  It’ll do the little explode animation and be gone

Your UVA English professor would probably not be pleased with the way that you did not capitalize the word “English.”

Your video above was fantastic, I hope that you can to a similar treatment to Spotlight.

Could you please show a video of some fixes that make spotlight the way it was in Leopard and Snow Leopard?  There are many things that I do not like about the Spotlight in Lion…one of them is that you have to go to too many steps to find something by Name.  Whereas, in Leopard and Snow Leopard it was one click away…now it is three clicks away (if you even know where to click to bring it up).  Thank you.

  13. Jordan says:

The biggest thing that i find annoying is that in lion u can no longer use three fingers on the touch pad to go back and forth. Do anyone know if there is a way to fix this?

    Yes,

  19. Guest says:

The biggest annoyance I have is that Cult of the *Mac* uses Flash.

  20. Victor says:

I really don’t know if this is a configuration bug, but actually there’s a simple way to make it work again. Go to the Trackpad pane on System Preferences and select the option with both three and four fingers to go back and forth. Worked for me…

  21. Victor says:

I mean, “both two and three fingers”, my mistake!

  22. Victor says:

There’s something that really annoys me: THE FINDER SIMPLY FORGETS ANY FOLDER CUSTOMIZATION!! I’ll explain: I have a customized folder, where I put some magazines and ebooks which behave like a stylized bookshelf (with an wooden bookshelf background an full icon style), pretty nice, actually. Anyway, after I arrange everything, close it, browse on other folders doing regular stuff, later, when I come back, everything simple vanished, as if nothin was ever made n acting like a regular folder, with the coverflow default style (!!!!) What am I doing wrong now, since it aways wok on the previous OS X versions?

  23. Nexuz5 says:

I don’t know if it’s a bug or not. But i have this problem on both my MacBooks.

Press Command-K to connect a network share.

This always open a window without sidebar and always in icon view.

It does not seem to remember my previous setting (Column View with Sidebar)

Anyone else have this finder problem?

  24. Katrin Reis says:

    Thanks for the great tips!
I’ve also been fiddling with the sidebar menu … There was an old folder that simply didn’t go away (I couldn’t right-click on it). But I’ve realized that if you hold the apple/cmd key while dragging something around, you have the same effect as with Leopard (i.e. you can drag sth. out of the sidebar and it evaporates).

  25. daniel80mitchell says:

Thanks for this, I never realised just how much ‘All My Files’ and the larger default font’s were annoying me until I watched this vid, then all of a sudden I hate Lion for a few moments until I got those two ‘features’ fixed.

  26. kappesante says:

i’d like to see REAL fixes:

    • how to avoid the sometimes not working ‘drag an item out from the download stack’
    • how to avoid the stupid ‘cancel’ while moving or copying multiple items in a location containing one or more of those items already. the old way was better.
    • how to enable triple fingers scrolling for spaces, cos many times the screen moves when not intended, while have two fingers and both or just one moves by a millimeter.

  27. RonBlatto says:

Thanks for the video.  Great tips.

  28. Sbrme says:

    Thank you Michael, very helpful.

  29. Jeffrey D. Ross says:

This is a great video! I really missed the status bar and never even knew about the path bar! thanks!!

  30. macSis says:

so how do you get back the colors of the icons on the sidebar without a 3rd party app?

  31. Andy Cohen says:

Another nice feature of the finder window that you might not be aware of is that you can drag and drop any folder or icon into the top tool bar for quick access. For example my printer and mail Icons live in my finder tool bar for quick drag and drop printing and email attachments. These icons can be dragged from just about anywhere. For instance, from spotlight and of course the dock as well as the finder it’s self. I saw that a few people had figured out they could remove side bar icons be hold cmd and drag. This trick works throughout Lion; cmd drag icons out of the status bar at the top od the desktop as well as most app tool bars including finder. The cmd key actually does lots of neet stuff. Try showing a drop down menu just about anywhere in the system and press/hold cmd to see hidden options, new try press/hold cntl or options and sometimes you’ll see even more!

Thanks for the tip on dragging icons and folders to the Finder’s top bar!

Great tips MS/ can you help us pinch & Zoom in Finder?
also how do we get your neat red expanding blast of light when you click /use your cursor?

  34. Michael Steeber says:

    I use Screenflow.

  35. Margaret Jackson says:

I found your video really  clear,  easy to understand and interesting. I upgraded to osx Lion yesterday. Today wanted to find something, went to the ‘Find’ tab in ‘file’ in the finder and nothing happened. It said it was searching but nothing…this happened yesterday too. Do you think this is to do with Lion?
    Thanks,
    M

  36. OochieBabe says:

    oh yeah, cool. thanks

  37. Juan Pablo Sanchez says:

How do you make the finder window appear the same size after reseting the computer. I resize and when I turn back on it is small and I have to resize again. Please reply to my email jpsanchez@me.com

  38. richarddas says:

System Preferences > General > Sidebar icon size : small

    THANK YOU!

  39. Matthew Cressatti says:

The video was really useful, but there was one other thing I was looking for.  If you drag a photo onto the toolbar an icon of the photo will remain up there on all of your finder windows.  is there a way to remove this icon?
