Bricks puts a new spin on block destruction

Bricks

I know I’ve said it before, but video games hate bricks.

And to that end, here’s yet another title about destroying those square bastards. It’s called Bricks, and it has a novel approach to smashing things that gets as fast-paced and exciting as it does embarrassing to be seen playing.

It’s probably not that bad if someone catches you, but you may raise some eyebrows. Here’s why.

Bricks has you rotating your entire iOS device in order to put your targets in the path of a bouncing ball that you unleash upon them. It works best if you keep your phone or iPad parallel to the ground, so you don’t quite look like a non-gamer playing a racing title.

It gets really tense really quickly, however. You’ll curse your wrists for not being able to spin around like the head of an owl, and you’ll make shots you thought you’d miss. And you’ll hate bricks. Hate them. And you’ll take joy in their destruction.

It has a novel approach to smashing things.

While things start out simply enough, the game introduces some straight-up crazy later on. You’ll have targets that require multiple hits to destroy, extra projectiles, and so on. The game gets a lot of mileage out of a simple concept, and that’s really admirable.

Also, I just realized that you could probably just attach your phone or tablet to one of those turntables from a Chinese restaurant and give yourself a huge advantage. I just solved you, Bricks.

The good: Simple gameplay with a lot of variety and challenge.
The bad: You look a little silly playing it.
The verdict: It’s a great, minimalist, difficult, brilliant game that presents a new way to destroy everyone’s least favorite building material.
