Taking Pictures With An iPad Just Saved This Man’s Life [Video]

This man’s face is about to get smashed by a softball

Taking pictures with an iPad is a no-no. I don’t care if you’re Spike Lee, just don’t do it. Ever.

The only time it is acceptable to take pictures in a public place with your iPad, is if it’s going to save your life by preventing a softball from ramming through your skull.

That’s exactly what happened to this older gentleman at a University of Northern Iowa softball game. He was trying to capture the fierce action of the game, when an errant foul ball came screaming at his face. The backstop netting couldn’t stop the ball in time, so his iPad stepped up and intercepted the ball to save the man’s life.

Obviously the guy didn’t learn his lesson because he kept snapping pics like he was on assignment for Sports Illustrated, but maybe he’ll at least add a bulletproof case for his next excursion.

Still not a good enough reason.

This story is decidedly overblown and exaggerated. Examine the video. The softball didn’t even knock the iPad out of his hand. It’s doubtful that the ball had enough speed and force to do any serious damage to the man’s head if the iPad wasn’t there. He hardly seems fazed by the impact at all, so to say that the iPad “saved his life” is a huge stretch. Hyperbole, anyone? I’ve played softball before and even a good noggin cruncher would have to be going VERY fast to even break the skin. The only possible way this particular ball could have even come close to killing the man is the unlikely direct impact with his nose, forcing it up and into his brain — and this ball just doesn’t have the velocity or the angle to do anything close to that.

1: You might notice that it did in fact knock it out of his hand. It’s edited to show the game. 2: no matter what the speed, it would hurt like hell or break your nose. fer christs sake, it was an old man. It could have very well killed him.
