Who Needs The New iMac When You Can Get This Chinese Knockoff For $540

Who Needs The New iMac When You Can Get This Chinese Knockoff For $540

Thanks, but no thanks.

Apple is saying that the new iMac is having production problems overseas, and it’s looking like the new computer will barely be ready for Christmas. Demand for Apple’s latest desktop has spawned a Chinese knockoff called the “lavi.” Powered by Windows 8, the 21.5-inch model costs 3,350 yuan (about $540) with a 500GB hard drive.

Created by “Mr. Hong,” this knockoff has a 1920×1080 display, 4GB of RAM, and an Intel i3 dual-core or i5 quad-core CPU. A 128GB SSD can be installed for an additional fee.

M.I.C. Gadget says that the lavi is 0.9 cm thin at its edge, while Apple’s razor-like 2012 iMac is 0.5 cm thin. The lavi has a HD FaceTime camera, WiFi, VGA, LAN, and an authentic aluminum enclosure. Unlike the real iMac, there’s no USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt.

It’s crazy how realistic these knockoffs have become over the years. We expect Mr. Hong to get a call from Apple’s lawyers soon. If you want a new iMac, it’s obviously wise to wait for the real thing.

Apple must add a touch mode to the iMac because many Win8 iMac-clones will have also this option

But it’s powered by Windows 8! That’s not an option for a serious user, that’s an option for teenagers who share pictures in social media.

Yes, by all means let’s ensure Apple keeps parity with Win8 iMac-clones. (Derisive snort!). A touch screen on a desktop monitor is a bad idea. Who wants fingerprints all over the screen when it’s so easy to use a trackball (such as Kensington’s Expert Mouse) or Apple’s Magic Trackpad to get around the screen.

Yep. Cause this has been proven to be a winning feature

A touch mode for the iMac? Are you serious? Who would want to clean all of your snot and lord knows what else off that screen? Tablets and phones are the place for touch interfaces, laptop and iMac won’t need it. For this clone, I’d love to understand how they’re cooling it properly, I’m sure they’ve ripped off Apple’s design, but it still can’t be easy to engineer the enclosure properly. This thing is 1/4th the price of an iMac at present, but with running Windows 8, and possible longevity issues it still doesn’t add up to value.

I’d give that thing six months before the front panel starts peeling off.

Because it run Windows is why.
