iCloud.com Email Addresses Are Now Available With iOS 6 Beta 3

Along with today’s launch of iOS 6 Beta 3, Apple has started to roll out iCloud.com email addresses to developers. When iOS users signed up for iCloud in the past they received an email address @me.com. Now that MobileMe has been shut down, Apple is starting to transition over to @iCloud.com email addresses.

In the changelogs for iOS 6 Beta 3, Apple revealed -

icloud.com email addresses are now available for iCloud mail users. Users signing up for new Apple IDs, or enabling Mail on their iCloud account for the first time, will automatically receive an @icloud.com email address instead of a me.com email address. iCloud users with @me.com addresses that have been used with iOS 6 beta 3 will receive an @icloud.com email address that matches their @me.com address.

iCloud.com email addresses are not functional as of yet, but they should be before iOS 6 is released to the general public later this fall. The transition from @me.com addresses to @icloud.com addresses is similar to the transition made in 2008 when Apple shutdown all @mac.com services.

What about those of us who just got @me.com email addresses with iOS5? Will our email addresses be changing?

I was a bit irritated because I made some alternate me.com accounts last night, but it seems (from me experimenting with the icloud.com settings) that the previous @mac.com and @me.com accounts will be preserved in the final transition to iCloud.com. I still wonder, though, if the @me.com accounts will be able to upgrade to the @icloud.com address or if they will retain the @me.com address. Probably the latter, as the .mac accounts did so.

I just ordered $20 worth of business cards with my @me address… this sucks.

Dalrymple over at The Loop says don’t worry. NEW users will get .icloud addresses. Just like .Mac addresses are still in use long after they stopped assigning them. .me addresses will continue to function.

Are .mac, .me, and .icloud all the same namespace? I believe so, and apparently they can be used interchangeably.
