How To Unlock An Out-Of-Contract AT&T iPhone

On Friday AT&T made an announcement that surprised many of us who had given up waiting: customers with an out-of-contract iPhone can unlock it to work with any other GSM SIM — like from T-Mobile. Now the official unlock is here, and the process is actually pretty simple.

Before you attempt to unlock you need to make sure your account isn’t in a longterm contract, your iPhone isn’t on a contract, and that your account is in good standing with AT&T. After that, the process is pretty straightforward.

First, you will need to obtain your iPhone’s IMEI number. To do this, navigate to your iPhone’s Settings > General > About. The next step is logging onto AT&T’s Wireless Support Chat and giving them your IMEI to get the process going.

AT&T will then ship the information off to Apple, who will send you an unlock code to enter into iTunes. Some reports have said it can take up to 72 hours to get word back from Apple, but users have seen it much quicker. Once the code is entered into iTunes, you will then be able to use your iPhone with T-Mobile or any other GSM network internationally.

I go my 3G unlocked today. Took 30 minutes and the process was smooth and clean. I call AT&T’s support number gave them the IMEI number, they verified that I was eligible to unlock and boom done.

Take note that after you speak to AT&T they will updated their database unlocking the phone. You will have to backup and restore the phone to unlock it.

I wanted to sign up for at & t but could not because they ask me for phone number. From my country I can not call at & t. Does anyone can help me? thank you very much, greetings from Argentina!

    Suerte

I just unlocked my iPhone and used the software to jailbreak it, too. Now that it is jailbroken, I can tether my iPhone and use it as a mobile hotspot for FREE. It was really easy, took a few minutes, is 100% reversible at any time, and very cheap. Check it out –> http://unlockeveryiphone.webs.com

Called AT&T. They told me that the only phone eligible for unlock are those that are out of contract. Since the iPhone 4 came out in June 2010, none of the iPhone 4’s are eligible till June of 2012, coming up. So the whole unlock thing is only good for 3GS’s and 3G’s for now.

I called ATT and was approved 2 days ago on an iPhone 4 and 3g. They said it would take 24-48 hours. When it was not unlocked, I contacted them again and they said that due to being overwhelmed with requests, it is now 5-7 days.

    LOL
