iPad 3 Will Be Backwards Compatible With All Smart Covers, But Not Current iPad 2 Cases [Report]

According to Japanese Mac blog Macotakara, the iPad 3 will be backwards compatible with current Smart Covers, despite the fact that it will be so thick as to not work with iPad 2 cases.

Macotakara claims that they don’t know the reason the iPad 3 will be thicker than the iPad 2, but we do: it’s necessary in order to install the twin-light system needed to lluminate the iPad 3’s Retina Display.

As for the image above, your guess is as good as ours. Macotakara seems to think it somehow relates to an iPad 3, so maybe it’s the unbranded aluminum back panel of one or something? As for the Smart Cover backwards compatibility, considering that all that is necessary to keep a Smart Cover on are magnets in the right places, I wouldn’t be surprised if Smart Covers continued to be backwards compatible for future iPads for many generations to come.

I really can’t see the next gen being thicker. I may be wrong but Apple is one for innovating and sticking at stuff till they get what they want…

Smart covers are also curved to follow the contours of the iPad 2, so if this is true that means the iPad 3’s form will be similar to the iPad 2, only a bit thicker.

That picture is kind of dubious.  It looks terribly fat.  It’s probably just the lighting, but it looks inches thick!

Interestingly, it doesn’t look like aluminium though.  Maybe they finally got those graphite fibre shells to work, or better yet the ceramic crystal they have the patent on.

Also, just because no one has mentioned it yet … isn’t that a landscape 30 pin connector hole? And why isn’t there any on the portrait end?

HHAHAHAHA!!!!  That is NOT the back of an iPad 3. Apple (and Jonathan Ive) would never release something that hideous. It looks like the top to a George Foreman grill ripoff.

Yeah, I agree with the shape. Looks like something on my dinner table from that picture.

I was expecting the iPad 3 would have the form factor of the iPhone 4 (metallic sides, flat, glass back (or plastic would do too)). That’s something I’d want to buy.
Then again, if the designers push to put iDevices into thin as can be each year, we’re looking at paper thin devices in ten years. But from what I see, I don’t like how it gained that weight. lol.
