Tim Cook is going through the preliminary statistics of Appleās business right now, which is usually where people snooze in these events, but this number really stuck out to us: Tim Cook says that the iPad has sold āmore iPads than any PC manufacturer sold of their entire PC line.ā
Read that quote again. Itās absolutely nuts. There are 84 million iPads out there, as of June. And Apple has done this while still growing the Mac 15% year-over-year compared to just two percent year-over-year growth for PCs.

Why? First of all, because Enderle thinks that so many details about the iPhone 5 have already leaked out that no oneās going to bother watching the event.
Steve Jobs famously declared a thermonuclear war on Googleās alleged iPhone copycat Android OS, but the full-on battle between the companies may be prevented before more of their lawyers have broken out of the trenches. Appleās retail division has come under fire recently regarding staffing cutbacks and layoffs. Earlier this month, Appleās newly-appointed head of retail,Ā John Browett, admitted that he āmessed upā with the new staffing formula, and that things would go back to normal for retail employees.
According to a new report, Appleās retail stores are still suffering from new policies that have been implemented under the leadership of CEO Tim Cook andĀ Senior Vice President ofĀ RetailĀ John Browett. The internal focus has started to shift towards a more revenue-driven strategy instead of a strategy that prioritizes the customer experience.
Samsung claims Apple wasn't willing to settle out of court.
Weāve already seen Tim Cookās memo to Apple employees following the companyās landmark victory over Samsung last Friday. As expected, Samsungās isnāt quite as upbeat or as celebratory. Released today, the Korean companyās announcement insists that it tried to settle with Apple out of court, but that Apple āpressed on with a lawsuit.ā It also notes that the verdict āstarkly contrastsā those recently made by courts in a number of other countries.
Following Appleās decisive victory over Samsung in court yesterday, Apple CEO Tim Cook sent out a corporate memo to Apple employees noting that it was āan important day for Apple and for innovators everywhere.ā
Samsung has been ordered by U.S. court to pay Apple over $1 billion in damages after it was ruled that Samsung products infringe on Appleās design patents.
Tim Cook has been very busy running Apple the past 12 months. There have been a lot of changes and new products that have helped make Apple the most valuable company ever. There have also been a lot of controversies, and headaches along the way. The road hasnāt been all smooth sailing, but we think Tim has done a great job in his first year as CEO of Apple.
Here are eight things that have kept Tim busy in his first year as CEO:
Tim Cook is as much a part of Apple and its products as they are a part of him.
Today marks the first anniversary of Tim Cook as CEO of the worldās biggest company, but what has really changed under the soft-spoken, shy-seeming Alabaman?
Virtually everything. Tim Cook has given Apple what Steve Jobs never could: a conscience.
Itās been a rocking year for Tim Cook, his first as Appleās CEO. Not only did he not fuck up; Apple shipped a bunch of hit products and became the biggest company ever.
He also defused a big crisis in Appleās Chinese supply chain and has made Apple a little more open and relaxed (just a teeny bit).
Hit the jump for a great timeline of what Appleās been up to under Tim Cookās tenure. (Really, itās a fascinating timeline and was a ton of work.)
When a frail Steve Jobs announced it was time he leave Apple for good, it seemed an impossible task for anyone to fill his role as leader and CEO of one of the worldās best tech companies. But someone needed to take the reins, and so on our newest CultCast, we take a look into the first full year of Tim Cook as CEO, and ponder how the soft-spoken operations genius has imprinted Apple with his own unique DNA, and lead the company to heights many thought a post-Jobs Apple could never reach.

Beyond the numbers, there were some tantalizing tidbits about Apple and the companyās future plans during todayās quarterly financial call. An interesting report comes from All Things D today, detailing a argument from Google against Apple. Unsurprisingly, the discussion revolves around patents, particularly standard essential patents (SEP). Basically, Google is suggesting that when technologies become popular enough, even if they are proprietary, they should become public standards, available to everyone.
This patent could be Apple's biggest weapon against the competition yet.
Apple has been granted what has been described as āthe mother of all software patents,ā which covers a whole host of features that Apple pioneered with the iPhone. Not only is this huge for Apple in its fight against copycats, but it could have a significant affect on almost every single device that rivals the iPhone or the iPad.
Laurene Powell with husband and former Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
Steve Jobsās widow, Laurene Powell, who is said to be the richest woman in Silicon Valley, has reportedly purchased a $4 million home in Sun Valley, Idaho, where Apple CEO Tim Cook is attending the Allen & Company media conference this week. This is the first tablet Apple will need to be aware of.
Since its debut back in 2009, the iPad has dominated the tablet market. At the time of writing this piece, the device holds around 55% of the market share in the United States. Rival tablets from the likes of Amazon, Samsung, and HTC have tried to do battle with it, but theyāve had very little impact on its success.
But there is one tablet that Apple will need to keep its eye on: Microsoftās new Surface. Itās already being dubbed an āiPad killerā by some, and although weāre skeptical the Windows-powered slate will ākillā Appleās device, there are a number of reasons why the āProā variant will have more of an impact than you think.
According to the New York Times, Tim Cook has been the talk of the town in Idaho, making an appearance at the Allen & Co. Media Conference held annually in Sun Valley. Some have even called him āMr Popular,ā since Apple so rarely attends events such as these.
Cook has also lined up meetings with many executives, and is looking to make deals, apparently.
āThe Mac is still growing, and I think it could still grow, but I strongly believe that the tablet market will surpass the unit sales of the PC market.ā
Apple CEO Tim Cook said that at aĀ Goldman Sachs conference several months ago. Cook has been one the industryās most vocal proponent of tablets as the future of modern computing, and recent statistics support his argument. According to new data, traditional notebook computers will take a backseat to tablets in four years. By 2016, tablet shipments are estimated to surpass notebook shipments.
Demand for the Google Nexus 7 could be short lived if an iPad mini arrives later this year.
