There’s nothing like a lawsuit to start the morning. The U.S. International Trade Commission announced Thursday night it would investigate Apple’s claims of patent infringement against Kodak. On April 15, the Cupertino, Calif. company alleged the imaging company violated two patents involving digital imaging and digital cameras.

The trade body said it would announce in 45 days when it expects to complete the investigation. Last month, Apple alleged Kodak violated Patent No. 6,031,964: a system and method for using a unified memory architecture to implement a digital camera device; and Patent RE38,911: modular digital image processing via an image processing chain with modifiable parameter controls.

In February, the trade court began investigating Kodak’s claim against Apple. Kodak claims the iPhone infringed upon a patent allowing other applications to “ask for help” in executing certain features.

Apple Trademarks Its iPhone OS App Icons

Cupertino’s already got a history of stepping down on app developers who use Apple’s own app icons in their software, so clearly they are protective of their assets, but now words comes that Apple has filed trademark motions on a number of its official app icons.

None of them are new, so there’s no forthcoming features of future devices to spy here. Each icon is marked by a description as well as a list of colors, and an image of each app icon has been submitted in the huge size of 1000×1000 pixels, which means that Apple shouldn’t have to re-render any of them for the next decade to come.

Rumor: Apple to Use Imagination to Take Shot at ARM

The Apple gadget press is all a-twitter over news of yet another semiconductor company with ties to the Cupertino, Calif. consumer electronics giant. In a bit of Hollywood-style dishing of talk of discord, Imagination Technologies Ltd. is seen as going up against ARM to develop an iPhone-like graphic console for the home.

Apple is a 10-percent owner of Imagination, which makes the PowerVR graphics core for the iPhone. In a deal to be announced at the Embedded Systems Conference, Imagination will partner with MIPS Technologies, Inc. to display a high-definition chip meant for a home set-top box. Both Imagination and MIPS are rivals to ARM, who’s chips are the basis of an Apple design found in the iPad.

Apple Mulling Online Store with Social Networking

Can online stores become more friendly, more like brick-and-mortar retailers that take personal note of customers? That’s the goal of a new Apple patent application aiming to blend Internet sales and social networking.

The patent, filed in mid-December of 2009 and revealed this week, titled “Enhancing Online Social Atmosphere,” describes online shopping as frequently “sterile and isolating” and not the optimum method for encouraging consumers to loosen their pursestrings. The Cupertino, Calif. company hopes to employ social networking to increase the “linger” factor and make shoppers more sensitive to the buying habits of others.

The Artsiest iPhone Skin? Three Skin Makers Battle It Out [Review]

By

P1060157

I love iPhone skins. They provide pretty good protection from scratches, and are the equivalent of getting a tattoo for your iPhone. Except these images aren’t permanent — you can change skins as often as your mood.

Three of the best iPhone skin makers — Gelaskins, Smirk About and Infectious — all offer designer skins from original artists. The offerings are all pretty similar: they all cost around $15, they are pretty easy to apply, and all offer similar levels of protection.

How they differ is in their unique designs that make your iPhone stand out from the masses.

BlueAnt’s Rugged Bluetooth Headset, the T1, Cancels Wind at up to 22MPH

By

blueant_t1

At yesterday’s 2010 CTIA Wireless Show in Las Vegas, BlueAnt unveiled their latest iPhone-pairable Bluetooth headset, the T1.

The BlueAnt T1 is aimed less at your average desk jockey than, perhaps, the amorphously-envisaged NASA engineer testing shuttle engines in wind tunnels all day long. BlueAnt’s patented “Wind Armour Technology” promises to provide clear audio even in winds up to 22mph.

Otherwise, the T1’s sealed design promises to keep out dust and moisture, while removable silicon cases protect the headset from drops. Other features include automated caller announce, voice-controlled answering capabilties and A2DP support which will allow you to hear commands from your iPhone’s GPS software, if you’ve got it.

The BlueAnt T1 should be available in May for about $80.

Up Next: iGroups, Apple’s Social Location App

By

Apple has devs to the grindstone for a new social networking app called iGroups.

Patently Apple reports that docs out today from the US Patent Office describe a new service that would work on your iPhone and probably MobileMe, too.

Let’s say you’re attending SXSW: iGroups would keep you in touch with your co-workers and friends by allowing you to share your location plus info and comment on events as they happen, greatly facilitating which parties or events are worth attending or already over.

To accomplish this, iGroups reportedly employs a sophisticated cryptographic key generation system to ensure security and privacy.

The patent also states that if one of group devices lacks true positioning technology, Apple’s MobileMe service would provide “virtual GPS” capability to that user so they can still know the whereabouts of other group members.

Would you welcome a geo-location social networking app from Apple, or prefer to stick to Gowalla or Foursquare?

Or do you plan to shun the “Where’s Waldo?” world altogether?

Should Apple Buy Palm?

By

Palm seems in dire straights. Cannaccord Adams has cut its estimates following word AT&T may delay launch of the Palm Pre and Pixi from April to June or July. Now other analysts are suggesting Palm’s 400 handset patents could spark a bidding war between Apple and Google.

Cannacord analyst Peter Misek said Tuesday he’d “recently learned” AT&T would delay launching the two Palm handsets due to what he said was a “long list of technical issues” with the smartphones. Additionally, the carrier plans to “sharply reduce its marketing budget for the launch.” Along with weak sales, technical issues have started impacting Palm’s relationship with carriers, Misek said.

Report: Apple, Nokia Courtroom Battle to Wait until 2012

The outcome of Apple and Nokia’s dueling patent infringement lawsuits could wait until mid-2012 for a verdict from the international trade court. The two companies swapped lawsuits in 2009, alleging the other with infringing key technologies.

The three-year timespan for the U.S. International Trade Commission sets the stage for what Reuters has characterized as “the spectre of a prolonged legal struggle.” In January, when the ITC launched a probe of Apple practices, CoM noted the legal battle could span three years. A month later, the ITC announced it had begun investigating Apple’s claims against the Finnish cell phone giant.
