iPhones retain lead in US smartphone satisfaction rankings

The iPhone continues to be a satisfying hit with U.S. consumers.

For the sixth straight year, iPhones rank as the smartphone with the highest customer satisfaction score among U.S. consumers, according to new data released Monday.

T-Mobile remains the undisputed network operator for the fourth straight year, according to the survey from the American Customer Satisfaction Index, an economic analytics group.

Apple CEO Tim Cook will be part of a special podcast highlighting various college commencement speeches across the United States, featuring his virtual address last week to graduating students at Ohio State University. The speech will also be broadcast on some 850 road stations as part of commencement excerpts.

iHeartMedia announced Monday that the podcast – Commencement: Speeches for the Class of 2020 – will be released on May 15, ahead of “National Graduation Day” on May 17 in the U.S.

Zoom sees insane 2,680% growth on iOS as the world works from home

Video conferencing apps ruled the App Store in March, with Zoom benefitting particularly from the fact that most people are stuck home, figures released by leading app analytics platform Sensor Tower suggest.

Zoom was the most downloaded non-game app worldwide for March 2020. Sensor Tower told Cult of Mac that the iOS app was downloaded 27.8 million times in March 2020. That’s an astonishing 2,680% increase from the number of times it was downloaded last March.

Germany and Taiwan crack down on Zoom use by officials

Germany and Taiwan are cracking down on governmental use of videoconferencing app Zoom amid concerns that it might be too risky to use.

In an internal memo, the German foreign ministry restricted use of the service. The country said security and data-protection weaknesses make Zoom too dangerous to use, according to newspaper Handelsblatt. Taiwan also banned official use of Zoom for the same reasons.

AT&T on Monday laid out its COVID-19 relief measures for ensuring that customers can stay in touch with friends, family, and colleagues while they’re stuck at home. Starting April 2, there will be a number of measures in place to keep subscribers connected — including 15GB of additional hotspot data.

iPhones and Androids on Verizon’s cellular wireless network will get an additional 15GB of mobile data for free. The goal is to help this company’s subscribers keep in touch while working or schooling from home during the COVID-19 epidemic.

Earlier this month, rival T-Mobile went even farther by temporarily removing all data caps on customers who don’t already have an unlimited plan.

Internet service providers AT&T, Comcast, Cox, Verizon and many more have pledged to not cut off service from customers who can’t pay their bills because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Internet access is important during the crisis to keep the public informed, but also to let people work from home, attend school remotely, and keep in touch despite social distancing.

FCC plans to hit U.S. cellphone carriers with massive fines

America’s largest cellphone carriers are about to get hit with hundreds of millions of dollars in fines from the Federal Communications Commission according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.

Officials at the FCC found the companies broke the law by selling customers’ location data to third parties and are prepared to make AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint pay big time. The companies have reportedly been notified that fines could be on the way.
