Artist Pledges To Show Controversial Steve Jobs Trash Statue

By

stevejobsdoll

Every time a company or artist decides to make a Steve Jobs figuirine, Apple’s lawyers rush in with their sledgehammers to stop its production. It happened with the M.I.C. Gadget Steve Jobs action figure in 2010, and to toy maker In Icon in 2012.

Most people have gotten the message and just stay clear from Steve Jobs’ likeness, but one artist is hoping that his controversial Steve Jobs sculpture will prompt Apple to think different. How controversial is it? Well it’s made out of Steve Jobs’ trash the artist collected over a year ago, and limited number of black sculptures are being produced to represent each Foxconn suicide.

The Evolution Of Jailbreaking: Looking Back At iOS 5 And Ahead At iOS 6 [Feature]

Cydia remains a vibrant marketplace for home-brewed hacks and jailbreak apps, but how will the storefront evolve as iOS matures?
Cydia remains a vibrant marketplace for home-brewed hacks and jailbreak apps, but how will the storefront evolve as iOS matures?

Like Apple itself, jailbreak innovation is constantly evolving. Hackers and developers are continually pushing the boundaries of iOS. When Apple releases a major new version of iOS each year, jailbreakers immediately start finding new ways to enhance and improve upon the experience.

After iOS 5 was announced last summer, many believed that jailbreaking was starting to lose its appeal. The same questions are being asked this year with the release of iOS 6, mainly due to the fact that Apple continues to add and implement features that were previously exclusive to jailbreaking.

JailbreakCon, the only convention solely dedicated the jailbreak community, is happening this weekend in San Francisco, and Cult of Mac will be there. Jailbreaking iOS 6 and the iPhone 5 will be hot topics at the convention, and a huge underlying thread of conversation will be the future of jailbreaking itself.

I know what I'm doing this weekend.

Millions of us have spent many hours trying to eliminate those pesky green pigs in Rovio’s Angry Birds series, but now it’s time to switch teams. Rovio just released Bad Piggies on Android, iOS, Mac, and PC. And for the first time ever you’re joining the pigs on their mission to steal as many eggs as they can get their hooves on.

Get Mac OS X Mountain Lion To Speak Text On Command [OS X Tips]

By

Speak Highlighted Text

OS X has really good text to speech functionality for users with a visual or other learning disability, but it’s something that I think we all would benefit from at certain times. How about listening to a webpage when you’re folding clothes, or having your Mac your Twitter stream out loud while you do some sort of two-handed crafting project, like knitting?

Turns out, you can make this happen super easily with OS X Mountain Lion, invoking a keystroke to read highlighted text anywhere on your computer. Want to have your Mac read that Word doc your boss just sent over? This little tip will make it happen.

Why Jailbreak? It’s About Challenging The Status Quo [Feature]

There’s a common misconception about jailbreaking. Many believe that people jailbreak just to pirate apps. While many do undoubtedly jailbreak for the sole purchase of stealing, the reason jailbreaking exists is definitely not piracy.

At its heart, jailbreaking is about staying ahead of the curve. In this case, the curve is Apple itself. Innovation is key. Jailbreak developers create hacks, tweaks, and extensions for iOS that go beyond the boundaries of what Apple allows. Jailbreaking exists for the same reason Apple exists: to challenge the status quo.

The world’s first jailbreak convention, JailbreakCon, is happening this weekend in San Francisco, and Cult of Mac will be there reporting from the show floor. We sat down with a couple jailbreak designers who will be attending JailbreakCon to get their thoughts on jailbreak innovation, good design, and why iOS is the best mobile platform on earth.

Well maybe here’s my chance—Fly High With The Robocopter GST Special Edition: Have Fun Flying a Powerful Toy Helicopter Around Your Office

Woz: I’m Going To Live And Die As An Australian

The dinner conversation could be interesting.
Woz wants Australia's awesome broadband.

Steve Wozniak was lucky enough to get his hands on the iPhone 5 long before the vast majority of us; not because he co-founded Apple, but because he was in Australia where Apple retail stores open a good 14 hours earlier than those on the East Coast of the United States.

Woz has been in Australia a lot recent, and he’s just revealed that he is planning to wave goodbye to his California home and move there. He has already applied for an Australian citizenship, and proclaimed he’s going to “live and die as an Australian.”

Did Conan O’Brien Go Too Far With This iShiv Commercial? [Video]

Given the recent tragedies that have gripped Apple’s manufacturing arm with the Foxconn riots that have left at least ten individuals dead the week after the iPhone 5 launch, this parody commercial for an “18% rustier, 20% thinner” iShiv designed to “revolutuonize factory riots” by Conan O’Brien is undeniably in bad taste. Whether it’s offensively bad taste or hilariously bad taste is ultimately a matter of opinion.

Personally, I hate to admit it, but I laughed, then felt really terrible about having laughed. What’s happening at Foxconn is no joke, but at the same time, it’s the job of a comedian to push the standards of taste and to riff upon tragedy for a laugh, thus putting that tragedy into deeper relief. What do you think?
