With the new-ish integrated search function in OS X, I spend a lot of time clicking over from “This Mac” to “Documents” or “Dropbox,” since I typically start out in the folder I’m searching for anyway. I usually want to just search the folder I’m in, rather than the entire Mac, since that can be a lot of files to search through, especially if the search term I’m using is fairly generic (“I think it was something about kittens…”).
Yesterday, we dove into the Finder preferences to help you tell your Mac what folder to open new Finder windows with. Today, then, we’re gonna rush headlong back to those very same preferences to tell your Mac what to do when you’re searching for a file.

Twitter, the social networking company, purchased TweetDeck, the Twitter application company, back in May of 2011. Today, the Twitter-owned TweetDeck announced that it was discontinuing support for the venerable stand-alone Twitter clients on Android, iOS, and desktop computers via Adobe AIR, ostensibly to concentrate on the TweetDeck web experience.
While many current users of the clients may disagree, Twitter feels that its user base is both better served on the web, and that the decision mirrors the real-time activity of those very same TweetDeck customers.
“Over the past few years,” says the TweetDeck posterous website, “we’ve seen a steady trend towards people using TweetDeck on their computers and Twitter on their mobile devices. This trend coincides with an increased investment in Twitter for iPhone and Twitter for Android –– adding photo filters and other editing capabilities, revamping user profiles and enhancing search.”
In essence, then, TweetDeck, offering such things as customizable, filtered columns and some other user interface innovations, will no longer be accessible via TweetDeck AIR, TweetDeck for Android, or TweetDeck for iPhone. Instead, users will need to head over to the TweetDeck web client, or use a newly released Chrome app. For users who want Twitter on their Android or iPhone smartphone, they’ll need to use the official Twitter app, or another third-party app like Tweetbot.
The Mac and PC stand-alone apps, as opposed to the AIR apps, will not go away, but will no longer get new features first.

Here’s an interesting number for you: just a month after release, the Evasi0n jailbreak has already cracked wide open an astonishing 14 million iOS devices. Considering there’s only 23 million iDevices running jailbreaks across all iOS versions, that means that the vast majority of jailbroken devices are running a flavor of iOS 6.1.
Shipping times for the new 21.5- and 27-inch iMacs were this weekend reduced to just 1-3 business days for customers in the United States and Canada. Both machines have been in short supply since they went on sale back in November, and just one month ago, the shipping delay reached its peak when it slipped to 4-6 weeks in Europe.
Following Bloomberg’s report that the iWatch is a project Apple wants to deliver this year, the Verge has an interesting report saying that the iWatch project is being lead by Jony Ive himself, and that it will run a full version of iOS.
Ever since OS X 10.7 Lion, the Finder has a new sidebar section, called All My Files. It’s a list of, predictably, all the files on your Mac and it can be customized to show them in any style you like, sorting by Name, Date Created, Kind, Date Modified, and more. The trouble is, though, that all new Finder windows open to this All My Files section by default. Some folks might not like this, though, and wish for the long-ago days of, say, Snow Leopard, when Finder windows opened to the Desktop or some such.
Luckily, to make this happen takes just a quick trip into the Finder preferences to sort out. Thanks, Apple!
