Author Jonathan Zschau, writer of Buying and Owning a Mac: Secrets Apple Doesn’t Want You To Know says the top reason why Apple is so successful may be that it is just so darn easy to buy stuff from the Cupertino, Calif. company. “The phrase ‘eyes bigger than one’s stomach’ comes to mind here,” he writes.
“It can be awfully tempting to pay a little extra for that faster processor, more RAM, or hard drive space, but most buyers will be well served to go for an entry-level or mid-range model and upgrade the RAM or hard drive at a later date,” he suggests.
The second secret Apple likely doesn’t want out is that if you change your mind after a purchase, it is easy to return items. “Apple no longer assesses a res-stocking fee on returns. So if you find yourself unhappy with your new Mac, don’t hesitate to return it for a full refund,” according to Zschau.
He provides buyers more tips, including it’s not always necessary to buy new Macs and that AppleCare isn’t needed as soon as you unbox your new toy.

This article is a little half baked… only two tips…
Two typos in the excerpt presented here? I’m sure to buy this book!
And “secrets” such as “you don’t necessarily need to buy the top-of-the-line model?” You mean people should base their purchases on their actual needs? Thank goodness that the author was able to penetrate Apple’s veil of secrecy, and made it out alive to tell us.
hahaha, @twitter-92133842:disqus’s review is classic. looks more like a paid plug than bona fide reporting. i was mislead by the twitter post… boooo
Um… 10? … tips?
Okay, let me tell you something… I forgot but it had something to do with if you don’t want a Mac go buy your stupid Windows crap. Anyway it was gonna glorify the Mac and put down the PC. Speaking of PC, has anyone heard of Windows lately? They kinda took the backseat didn’t they. What’s it feel like Microsoft? I GOT THERE FIRST!!!!! LOL (Pirates of Silicon Vally reference)
You DON’T need to read them because they’re trivial.
And you CAN’T read them because the headline is misleading.
Apparently, the author is a contributor here.
Also, it gets better. I checked out the table of contents / preview on Amazon. Other secrets Apple is hoping you don’t know about: “Buying in a State With More Favorable Tax Laws,” “Buy with a Credit Card that has Cash Back Rewards,” and so on.

In that case, more like 1/5 baked
I have been reading this blog for close to two years and have been upset with you recent quality of articles. Before opening this article I said to myself, “I’f the title is misleading and I read nothing useful in it’s body, I will not be coming back to this site.” (I didn’t say this out loud, rather in my mind). To no surprise, you wasted one minute of my life and now I will be focusing my time on other apple/technology related blogs. Stop link baiting and write useful information.
“Pleeeeease buy the book”
This post is so stupid and misleading.
Thumbs up if that misleading heading got you hook, line and sinker.
I can’t see the top ten secrets :/
are they that secret?
Whenever I bought my latest Mac – the clerk at tbe Apple store in Northpark Mall (Dallas, Tx) actually talked me out of buying the faster processor and suggested the entry level model based on the questions they asked my concerning my planned usage – which is much more than email and web – might I add.
seriously, someone wrote a book on this? lame !
The title is pretty sensationalist but the tips are good, solid advice.
What, that you can return an item to an Apple store without a restocking fee?
I’m pretty sure I once asked a genius if I could bring something back and they were more than happy to let me know that I could.
I’m off to write a similar book: “What Apple Doesn’t Want You to Know About”
Chapter 1. The iPhone 5
That’s solid advice, right?
Link Bait
The article should be titled “Top 10 Secrets Apple Doesn’t Want people who don’t read CultofMac to know”
CoM needs to get page views too… Though my favourite was in an article where they referred to themselves as journalists.
