Wearable tech? This jacket lets you wear all your tech

The hoodie that allowed you to thread your earbuds through a special sleeve near the collar seemed as cool as that first-generation iPod. It was a true technical jacket.

Clothing company SCOTTeVEST makes that hoodie seem as vintage as your great-, great-, great- granddaddy’s buckskin jacket. It’s latest quilted jacket features 29 pockets for all gadgets, including a MacBook, yet keeps the silhouette bulge-free.

SCOTTeVEST has been around since 2000 and its previous lines have been described by one fashion magazine as being worthy of Inspector’s Gadget’s wardrobe. The OTG jacket (Off the Grid) looks more like something Q would assign James Bond (though he would have included a special pocket for a martini shaker).

Tech-carrying solutions, especially backpacks, messenger bags and smartphone cases, are a multimillion-dollar industry. Meanwhile, slowly carving out its own economy, is the emerging category of wearables, like the Apple Watch.

SCOTTeVEST makes good-fitting technical clothing while not fitting in either space. With the OTG, you can wear the technology you have — practically all of it.

The jacket is made with a rugged nylon that is stain- and water-resistant. It is a fall-spring jacket that can also be worn on warmer winter days, according to a company spokesman. It features two rapid-access panels that can hold a laptop (unless you order a women’s small or extra small).

A padded pocket on the other side can hold an iPad or tablet. There are two clear-touch pockets, great for your iPhone, and an RFID-blocking pocket for your wallet and passport to thwart skimming of credit cards and other digitized personal information.

Of course, the OTG holds headphone and earbud cords in the collar. But it also holds a charging cable that connects to an external battery.

The SCOTTeVEST jacket will work for people who travel with Android/PC gadgets. But judging by the company’s publicity photos incorporating Apple devices and a certain board member whose nickname is Woz, SCOTTeVEST is partial to the Mac set.

The OTG jacket wearer could load it down and feel comfortable because of weight-management panels that distribute and balance the weight throughout the jacket.

Colors options are black and navy blue; sizing runs up to XXL. The jacket for both men and women retails for $215 on the company website, which also features an array of clothing constructed with tech pockets for all situations.

  1. Hi, David, my name is Gavin. I work for SCOTTeVEST. We all just wanted to say thank you for this great article. We appreciate the thorough coverage of the brand new OTG Jacket for both men and women. It’s an amazing piece of engineering! Again, many thanks from us here in Ketchum, Idaho. Enjoy!

    • I bought mine! Arriving Saturday, although I won’t see it until Monday (out of town). Can’t wait to leave my laptop backpack behind, and amaze people when I pull it out of my coat!

The jacket is probably fine, although it’s crazy to think walking around with a laptop on your chest is in anyway comfortable, and I don’t care what ‘technology’ is in the fabric you’re carrying a big square- and thinking it’s hidden is crazy. But my experience with the company…well, sleezy comes to mind. The adage ‘if it sounds too good to be true….’ works well here. If I could do it over, I would buy a regular jacket and really nice case that held a bunch of other stuff. One final thought: there’s an expectation that stuff in the jacket is safe. Maybe, but my eVest has the logo in four different places (one bigger than a silver dollar). Its like a big bullseye for the discerning thief. Great for marketing and branding – not so good for the purpose of the thing.

Apologies for the delayed reply to this — we’re sorry to hear you had a negative experience with our clothing in the past. We’ve cut down on branding on all our clothing for a more streamlined look and our customer service department is always happy to help if you’re not satisfied with your purchase. If you’d like to chat, please email [email protected] — would be happy to resolve whatever issue you had that came off as a “sleezy” experience
