Twitter-Owned Vine Hits Top US Free App Spot, Co-Founder Announces It On…Twitter

Top free app in the US is nothing to sneeze at.
Top free app in the US is nothing to sneeze at.

Vine’s co-founder and Creative Director, Rus Yusupov, tweeted today that Vine, the social video app of the moment, has hit the top spot on Apple’s own Top Free Apps list in the App Store. He attached a screenshot of the App Store from his iPhone, showing Vine sitting on top, ahead of hot (and highly advertised) games like Warner Bros’ Injustice: Gods Among Us, and Sega’s Sonic Dash.

Here’s what Yusupov said on Vine’s parent company’s own social networking service: “Hey guys, remember that time we made the No. 1 most popular app in the world? @ckb @dhof @bobby @vineapp”

Vine’s only been out for about six months as a Twitter product, and just a few more before that since Twitter acquired the young start up in October of last year. Apple put a 17+ age rating on the app after it got kicked for mature content this past February.

Vine’s added a few new features recently, which have certainly helped it climb to the top spot. It also helps that it’s perfectly suited for the mobile social sharing world, with its six second video loops capturing the attention of media and celebrity alike.

What would have made the announcement better, of course, would have been a short Vine video to announce the congratulatory news. But hey, it’s possible that Yusupov is too busy celebrating his well-earned success to grab some video, right?
