Sometimes batteries go bad, but this 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook’s battery didn’t just fizzle out: it expanded like a marshmallow in the microwave. Just a reminder to take your MacBook in for servicing when that tell tale exclamation point dangerously pops up over your Mac’s battery icon, eh?

Guess I got worried for a moment, I usually use my macbook for ~10hours a day in a ~90-100 degree room so it gets pretty toasty, then I saw that picture. Time for a new job…
Happend to my macbook pro 17″ battery one year back. It almost broke my laptop iself since it didnt give me any warning except my track pad was not pressing. The battery pack was squeezing trackpad from inside. Tried contacting apple and went to store (India) also with battery they didnt had much helpful respone, they didnt even understand the danger of my problem. What if this happens to the ne gen closed macbooks?
I had one that looked at least that bad. I never got any warning and it happened over night while my laptop was charging.
Jiffy Pop Batteries!
I have the same laptop and the first battery was heading this direction when I took it to Apple (out of warranty). The Genius couldn’t replace it outright being so old but asked if I considered it a safety hazard. Yes, I agreed, I considered it a safety hazard.
In that case I can most certainly replace this battery one time, he told me.
The next battery I had to cough up for myself 2 years later.
wanna hear something crazy…i had a battery just like that, that stopped holding a charge..so i replaced it and then about a year later I was cleaning out my office and opened the box that the old battery was in and it looked just like that…so mine did that…without being plugged in, sitting in a box, in a cabinet…wtf?
I’m pretty sure that’s a 2006+ MacBook Pro battery. Not a MacBook battery.
It is. It says 17-inch on the back plate. I had the Exact same thing happen to a 2007 17-inch MBP a few weeks ago. It’s a spare that my wife and I use to watch Hulu and Netflix on in the kitchen. She noticed that it was ‘puffed-up’ and actually lifting the bottom of the Mac off the counter.
Just the same happened five times with my MacBook Pro 17″ 2,4 GHZ (2007) model. It was always replaced by Apple under AppleCare.

I have a late 2006 MacBook. It never had AppleCare and it is 3 years out of warranty. It is on 24 hours a day most days, and is almost always plugged in.
About 6 months ago, it started to sit a bit unevenly on my desk . I didn’t look at the battery for a couple months, and when I did I noticed it had bulged almost a 1cm…
The battery reported that it had only 100 charge cycles. It still charged fine.
About 2 months after I discovered the bulge, I finally went to the Apple store to see what they had to say about it. Without even asking a question, the genius went in the back and got me a new battery. No questions asked.
Apple is the only company I have ever known to support such “old” equipment, but to replace parts too is just amazing. Does that help me in my future buying decisions? You bet!
Update: There was no warning icon either…
