A new documentary combining high-stakes adventure with groundbreaking wildlife conservation started streaming on Apple TV+ Friday. Previously the streamer released a new trailer for The Wild Ones documentary series, below, promising all sorts of high-tech derring-do in the name of saving threatened animal species all over the world. Now you can watch it.
The six-episode documentary, premiering July 11, follows a team of elite wildlife experts as they venture into Earth’s most remote and dangerous environments to protect critically endangered species.
Update: The Wild Ones began streaming Friday. As one critic cited on the reviews site Rotten Tomatoes put it (though it’s too early for a fresh or rotten rating): “The Wild Ones is a triumph of storytelling, a visual feast and a heartfelt plea to cherish and protect the natural world.”
The Wild Ones documentary series debuts July 11 on Apple TV+
The six-part documentary adventure series showcases the work of three specialists who sound like an “A-Team” strike force in the press materials: former Royal Marines Commando and expedition leader Aldo Kane, wildlife and camera trap expert Declan Burley and ecological storyteller and wildlife cinematographer Vianet Djenguet. Together, this trio embarks on missions across six countries — Malaysia, Mongolia, Armenia, Indonesia, Canada, and Gabon — to capture unprecedented footage of some of the world’s rarest animals.
In the trailer, the adventurous trio say they hope to help scientists save endangered species. Read on to see how that could pan out.
Revolutionary technology meets conservation
What appears to set The Wild Ones apart from traditional wildlife documentaries is its innovative approach to filming and research. The team deploys an impressive arsenal of more than 350 custom-built remote cameras, thermal drones, wearable underwater tags and AI-powered imaging technology, Apple TV+ said.
The cutting-edge equipment allows them to capture intimate animal behavior that has never been documented before. And at the same time, it supports active conservation missions on the ground.
The series focuses on six critically endangered species: the Malayan tiger, Gobi bear, Caucasian leopard, Javan rhino, North Atlantic right whale and Western lowland gorilla. Each animal represents a unique conservation challenge and plays a vital role in its ecosystem’s delicate balance.
Groundbreaking discoveries and real-world impact
The team’s work has already yielded significant conservation victories, according to the streamer. Their efforts have contributed to identifying a new individual rhino, protecting a new tiger cub litter and advancing anti-poaching initiatives. These achievements demonstrate how modern filmmaking technology can directly benefit wildlife preservation efforts.
Apple TV+ viewers can expect to witness several wildlife firsts when the series debuts. The team captured the first-ever footage of the world’s most endangered wild tiger in Malaysia’s Royal Tiger Reserve, thermal night imagery of the elusive Gobi bear deep in the Mongolian desert, and a face-to-face encounter with a wild silverback gorilla in Gabon’s forests. Perhaps most dramatically, the series documents a real-time whale rescue operation in the North Atlantic.
What the trailer for The Wild Ones documentary series:
Expert collaboration and storytelling
The team combines scientific rigor with compelling storytelling. It works alongside local conservation experts in each location. The Wild Ones not only showcases the immediate threats these endangered species face but also explores how each animal is interconnected with its broader ecosystem. This approach helps viewers understand the complex relationships that make conservation efforts so crucial.
The series comes from Offspring Films, the production company behind Apple TV+’s acclaimed nature documentaries Earth At Night In Color and Earthsounds. Executive producers Alex Williamson and Isla Robertson bring their expertise in creating visually stunning and scientifically important wildlife content.
