With their usual alacrity, those jovial hacker nerds over at the iPhone Dev Team have already jailbroken iOS 5. But there’s a caveat: it’s tethered only, for now. Also? Don’t even think about jailbreaking an iPhone 4S or iPad 2.
If you head on over to the Dev Team’s website, you can pick up the latest version of redsn0w, which will jailbreak and install Cydia on your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad or iPod touch.
Tethered only, though, which means if you need to reboot your device, or if it runs on battery power, you’ll need to hook it up to your computer and run redsn0w again to restore it to jailbroken state.
Here’s another couple of things to know. If you’re using Ultrasn0w or Gevey SIM to keep your iPhone carrier unlocked, you probably should stay away from upgrading for right now, according to the Dev Team, although there are ways to restore while keeping your baseband intact.
As for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, both devices run Apple’s new A5 processor, which is proving to be an absolute bitch to jailbreak. Only the iPad 2 can be jailbroken under iOS 4.3.3 using the userland JailBreakMe v3 exploit. If the iPad 2 is any example to go by, don’t expect the iPhone 4S to be jailbroken any time soon.
Look for our iOS 5 Jailbreak Superguide to be posted later today.

i have a 3Gs with a modified baseband to iPad baseband, will this allow me to update to iOS5? i am running 4.3.3 now…
if there is a way to make it upgrade back to the non jailbroken iOS5 that would be excellent.
Dammit! I’ve just bought an iPad 2, was hoping to get it Jailbroken on iOS 5 asap

With all the potential problems and glitches of using the stock iOS devices and ROMs, I can’t for the life of me understand why anyone would want to jailbreak and add all those other problems in as well. If it’s done for interests sake on a spare phone, or if you are a major uber-tech-geek, then maybe.
The average person who jailbreaks however is an idiot IMO however. All that hassle just to save a few bucks on pirated apps? Crazy cakes.
I can’t help but wonder if c0mex had anything to do with the devices becoming more difficult to jailbreak… ;)
i disagree, the average person willing to jailbreak their iDevice him/herself is probably knowledgeable enough not to download just anything from Cydia. And i can probably say around half the people who jailbreak their device don’t do it for the free apps, it’s for the customization
I thought it is going to be some boring old post, but it really compensat for ours time. I will posted a link to the article on our blog. I am sure ours visitor will thought that very useful

I agree with Archangel! The only idiots are the ones that generalize all jailbreakers as people doing it for free apps. It’s all about customization.
the iPad 2 hardware had a fix for the exploit used for any devices but it, that’s before c0mex started working for apple, they fixed it themselves.
Redsn0w does not allow you to modify while keeping your baseband. Not quite sure exactly how all that works (never had to bother with it myself), you should follow Musclenerd on twitter, when you can get upgraded and keep your baseband he’ll tweet about it.
Also, no, if you want to keep the modified baseband you will not be able to update to non jailbroken iOS5, the jailbreak is necessary for the baseband to be modded.
Sorry…but I jailbreak specifically to get around two AT&T issues.
First…I juse my3g to get around the 20MB limit on app store downloads. For the most part, it’s not a big deal. If it’s a huge file (Infinity Blade), I’ll wait til I’m home. If it’s a 21MB app, it’s just ridiculous to not be able to download it over 3G.Second…I just mywi for tethering. I hardly use it, but it’s nice to have when I need it. There is no way I’m paying an extra $20 per month for tethering. It’s AT&T’s way to get more money out of people.
thanks a lot,
i do follow muscle nerd, but he get so many mentions he rarely reply..
what if i don’t want to keep my modified baseband,is there a way to return it all to the default original set up?
I wouldn’t jailbreak if Apple was better about giving the end user what they want. I jailbreak not for pirated apps, but for the 5 row keypad and retina display app, both fix
Issues that I cannot for the life of me figure out why Apple hasn’t in the OS
I had a jailbroken and unlocked 3GS running 4.3.3 on iPad baseband. I upgraded to iOS 5 and as you guess, din’t work. I had to restore my phone by downloading 4.3.3. Put the phone in DFU mode, change the host file in system32 so that I can “trick” iTunes and then shift + restore. So that restored everything to factory settings. Then jailbreak and unlock again.
can you give me more details,i am running OSX..it seems like your solution runs on windows,if i am not mistaken.
i would appreciate it if you can help.
amen
it’s mostly a power-user thing. I like being able to customize my device like I would my computer. Quick-access settings, nested folders, tons of shortcuts, etc.
there is WAY more to do on a jailbroken device than pirated apps. if you don’t know what those things are then you have no business jailbreaking
att and verizon can now detect mywi and charge you for using it…try using pdanet for tethering
Me fuckin too-via ipad 2
Jailbreaking is about power and control over YOUR device… customization and tweaks to make your phone even better… Having the advantage of installing pirate apps, for me is just a testing environment where I can try the apps before spending my money on apps that really worth doing it…
I fucking hope so three, goddammit!!!
Sent from my brand new ipad2 running firmware 4.3.5 …
OS devices and ROMs, I can’t for the life of me understand why anyone would want to jailbreak and add all those
:) great
wait. i used red snow to tether my ipod and semi tether will i be able to update my ipod to a new ios when out and is there any way i an get rid of jail break? plz
