Desperate dad Matt Damon and ex-con Casey Affleck join forces for the heist of a lifetime in Boston, and guess what — it goes horribly wrong. With high-speed car chases, multiple explosions and Boston accents flying all over the place from a smart-alecky veteran cast, the new trailer for Apple Original Film The Instigators stormed computer screens Thursday in entertaining fashion.
The Instigators debuts in select theaters on August 2 before streaming on Apple TV+ August 9, but you can watch the first trailer now.
UPDATE: With its week in select theaters now past, star-studded Apple Original Film The Instigators starts streaming Friday on Apple TV+. Reviews of the caper-gone-awry flick find a lot to like, particularly in the chemistry between Boston-bred leads Matt Damon, one of the film’s producers, and Corey Affleck, one of its writers. Doug Liman (Swingers, Go, The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) directs.
The Instigators trailer shows heist gone wrong with wise-cracking veteran supporting cast
Judging by the trailer, The Instigators will, at the very least, be a good popcorn movie. Damon plays Rory, an overtaxed and desperate Boston-area dad looking for more than just financial answers as he talks things through with his therapist, played by Oscar-winner Hong Chau (The Whale, Watchmen). Concerned, she asks if he has tried everything he could to right his financial wrongs. “Not everything,” he replies. And soon we see what he hasn’t tried: Planning a major heist with ex-con Cobby (Casey Affleck). They want to take down a corrupt politician at a big event, so they build a crew.
It’s no spoiler to say things go sideways. It’s the whole premise of the trailer. But as things blow up (literally in some cases), we see a supporting cast for the ages in this thing. In addition to the very recognizable Chau, The Instigators boasts a slew of veteran players, including Michael Stuhlbarg (Trumbo, Dr. Strange), Ving Rhames (Mission: Impossible films, Day of the Dead remake), Alfred Molina (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Spider-Man 2) and Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Nightmare Alley). And you can tell some of them are going to chew on the scenery, as they say.
Here’s Apple’s description of the movie:
Rory (Damon) and Cobby (Affleck) are reluctant partners: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to rob a corrupt politician’s ill-gained earnings. But when the heist goes wrong, the two find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos, pursued not only by police but also backward bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses. Completely out of their depth, they convince Rory’s therapist (Hong Chau) to join their riotous getaway through the city, where they must put aside their differences and work together to evade capture — or worse. The Instigators also stars Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina and Toby Jones, with Jack Harlow and Ron Perlman.
