If you weren’t convinced that the most dramatic upgrade you can do to a Mac is install a solid state drive in its belly, check this video out.

15 seconds. Just 15 seconds. That’s how long it takes a 3.4GHz Sandy Bridge iMac armed with a Sandy Bridge processor and an SSD drive to launch all of its apps simultaneously.

Seriously, although the processor plays a part here, even the 1.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Air with SSD is the fastest seeming Mac I’ve ever played with. If you’ve been hemming and hawing over whether or not to make a MacBook Air your next laptop, just do it.

Thanks for ignoring the Mac Pro. We still exist, and we’re even being updated this year, just like every other. Not gone yet.

Big Deal, my 8-core Mac Pro has a slower clock speed (2.8 GHz) and opens far more applications than that in just 8 seconds flat with an OWC SSD.

How about some real news please…

Hm.  Not that impressive; you’ve gotta throw in the Adobe suite & a bunch of other third party apps: http://vimeo.com/19317452

Hi guys go to this site: http://www.myfirstmac.com/

I used this last year when I switched to a MBP. Best decision I have ever made, I do not miss the blue screen of death, waiting 10mins for my Toshiba to boot up, or dealing with viruses.

I was a little but concerned about getting use to a Mac, but honestly everything on it is so much more intuitive than windows so the transition was painless.

    Anyways, hopes the site helps!

Do what I did, buy an iMac, run Windows XP on it.

The best thing you can do is upgrade the HD to SSD.  I just upgraded my 2007 Macbook (old HD died).  But it is a whole new Mac…lightning fast.  Plus for $5 on Amazon you can get a external drive enclosure for your old HD and use for Time Machine (Apple’s automatic backup system that is effortless, works in background and actually works!).
As for using the Mac…not much to it besides getting used to where things are as compared to Windows.  Almost everything you need is under Apple symbol.  About my Mac shows summary and will give you in-depth info if you hit more information button.  System preferences contains all of your user specific options like network, printers, file sharing.  Force quit..if a program gets stuck.  Recent items to quickly launch an item previously used.  The only other item needed to start is disk utility program under Go menu..Utilities. This will fix things that can get out of whack over time like file permissions and file directories.  Finally, if you like to tinker, OSX has built in VCN allowing you to control your Mac remotely.  Go to sharing under System Preferences under Apple symbol and turn on Remote Management.  To get to your Mac you can either go to “Connect to Server” under Go menu and either browse or type vnc://ip address into box.  You can also type vnc://ip address into browser.  Good luck.

I still learn some new things there every once in a while and I’ve been using a Mac for years.

Looks like I need a solid state drive! I bet that’s where a lot of this speed is coming from as the other hardware is pretty conventional.
