Retired secret assassin Dan Morgan (Mark Wahlberg) and his now-the-wiser wife Jessica (Michelle Monaghan) lead the Morgan family to Europe for the holidays, only to find a gun-toting Irish villain from the past — played by English actor Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) — haunting them. And by “haunting” we mean trying very, very hard to rip off and probably kill Dan. It’s Apple Original Films’ first sequel, The Family Plan 2, streaming November 21 on Apple TV, just ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

“Deck the halls, dodge the bad guys. The Morgans are back for The Family Plan 2, this time in Europe,” newly rebranded Apple TV (no “+”) said on its YouTube channel. The action-packed trailer looks like a fun mix of comedy and combat. Watch it below.

Wahlberg takes The Family Plan to Europe in action-comedy sequel
October 30, 2024: Apple Original Films revealed Wednesday it plans a sequel to streaming hit action-comedy The Family Plan with the principal cast returning, including Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan. This time the Morgan family goes across the pond for a “holiday-themed European adventure,” no doubt with plenty of festive, old-world gunfire.
Apple said the Apple Original’s first outing dominated viewing charts on Apple TV+. It didn’t rate highly with critics, however.
Mark Wahlberg is set to return as Dan Morgan in the sequel to The Family Plan. He plays the kindly family man with a secret past that won’t stay buried. The actor, who will also serve as producer, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, with production expected to begin soon to capture the European winter setting.
“Making The Family Plan and seeing it become an instant success with global audiences has been incredibly rewarding,” Wahlberg said. “We can’t wait to collaborate with our partners at Apple and Skydance again on this next chapter.”

Not a critical hit, but a popular movie
The first film netted a rotten 27% Fresh critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a more-encouraging audience rating of 61%. The sequel will transport the Morgan family to Europe for what’s promised to be anything but a peaceful Christmas vacation. Michelle Monaghan will reprise her role alongside younger cast members Zoe Colletti and Van Crosby, maintaining the core family dynamic that apparently resonated with viewers in the first film.
Simon Cellan Jones, who helmed the original, returns to direct from a script by David Coggeshall. “I’m thrilled to be back with the Morgans as they tear through Europe in search of the perfect action-packed family Christmas,” Cellan Jones shared, hinting at the holiday chaos to come.
The production team remains largely unchanged, with Skydance Media’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger producing alongside Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson through Municipal Pictures. John G. Scotti and Cellan Jones will serve as executive producers.
More films on Apple TV+
This announcement adds to Apple’s growing slate of high-profile collaborations with Skydance Media. They include The Gorge, starring Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy, and Fountain of Youth featuring Natalie Portman and John Krasinski. The streaming service has been bolstering its original film offerings. Recent successes include Wolfs with George Clooney and Brad Pitt, and The Instigators starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck.
The sequel announcement comes as Apple continues to expand its presence in theatrical releases, with Oscar-winning director Steve McQueen’s Blitz set for a November theatrical run before streaming, and the highly anticipated F1 starring Brad Pitt scheduled for a wide theatrical release in June 2025.
The Apple TV+ service is available by subscription for $9.99 with a seven-day free trial. You can also get it via any tier of the Apple One subscription bundle. For a limited time, customers who purchase and activate a new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac or iPod touch can enjoy three months of Apple TV+ for free.
After launching in November 2019, “Apple TV+ became the first all-original streaming service to launch around the world, and has premiered more original hits and received more award recognitions faster than any other streaming service. To date, Apple Original films, documentaries and series have been honored with 580 wins and 2,787 award nominations and counting,” the service said.
