Sonos’ new mobile app is so bad that the company is reportedly considering bringing back its old S2 app. The company released its revamped mobile app in May this year, just a few weeks before the Sonos Ace launched.

Since then, Sonos users have criticized the app for missing basic features.

Sonos might relaunch its old S2 app

The new Sonos app takes a cloud-based approach and packs significant underlying improvements. It will seemingly enable Sonos to add more modern features to its ecosystem and devices in the future.

However, existing Sonos users have heavily criticized the new app for lacking basic features like sleep timers and alarms. Following the backlash, the Sonos CEO apologized for the app’s hasty rollout and promised a bi-weekly release schedule with new features. The company has also postponed the launch of two new products in Q4 2024. Instead, it has redirected all its resources and made its number one priority to get the new app in shape.

Yet the situation has not improved much. Due to this, high-level Sonos executives have discussed the possibility of relaunching the old app, reports The Verge. This would give the company more time to address all the issues with the new app. But this is easier said than done, as bringing back the old S2 app could introduce more technical headaches for the team. It also might not play well with the new app’s revamped underlying architecture.

Sonos is losing money due to its new mobile app

The new Sonos app will purportedly cost the company $20-$30 million in the near future. That’s on top of the goodwill and customer faith it is losing daily.

Sonos CEO Patrick Spence has previously apologized for pushing ahead with the revamped app’s release despite it not being ready. He still believes the new app will eventually benefit all Sonos customers, blaming his poor execution for all the issues.
