The description “small batch” is often associated with bourbon and cigars. With those words come an expectation of a higher quality derived from artisanal techniques, not possible with mass production.
WaterField Designs refers to itself as “small batch” and the company’s bags and cases, especially for Apple computing products, fit nicely in the company of a fine cigar or whiskey. Its latest product, the Bolt Laptop Backpack, stands apart from its oft-sporty-looking backpack brethren.

Handsome in black ballistic nylon or tan waxed canvas, the Bolt looks good with a suit while still offering the versatility to stow away gym clothes or overnight essentials. One marquee feature is a designated laptop compartment, lined with a shock-absorbing foam, from which a 15-inch MacBook can be easily removed in an airport security line through a quick-access zipper.
Men are purchasing more accessory bags than ever before and anchor an $11.5 billion U.S. accessory bag market, according to a report by The NPD Group. WaterField Designs, by design, isn’t going to be a big player in this market. But the San Francisco artisan bag company — a humble workshop, according to its website — has been around since 1998, building a healthy business and reputation elevated largely by word of mouth.

The Bolt went on sale Tuesday on the WaterField website. It is loaded with low-profile pockets, inside and out, and boasts a generous main compartment. It has a thick leather bottom to give the bag structure; its mesh back cushion is also a rolling suitcase slot.
The Bolt might be a bit of a jolt to the wallet at $329, but WaterField expects the bags to be with their owners a long time.
