Good news, Silo fans: You’ll be able to see season three of the hit sci-fi series. Not only has Apple TV+ committed to making it, but the showrunner promises it will be better lit than Silo season two.

That should please those who complained about having trouble making out what was going on in parts of the more recent episodes.

Silo season 3 might still be dark, but it won’t be so poorly lit

Silo season two earned rave reviews, and pulled in a big audience for Apple TV+, but it was kind of dark. Not necessarily depressing … genuinely hard to see.

For the most part, that was deliberate. The post-apocalyptic series takes place in bunkers deep underground, so dimly lit settings seem appropriate. And without spoilers — not everyone finished season two already — some of the latest episodes make the darkness a part of the plot.

‘Honey, can you see what’s happening?’

Still, a post in a Silo subreddit is typical of many viewers: “I am having trouble watching the series due to the low lighting in season 2.”

And on an Apple forum, one disgruntled Silo viewer asked for a refund due to the show’s excessively dark cinematography.

“It’s worthless to even try to watch it,” wrote zakcoop. “I have a very high-quality HDTV and even sitting in a dark room I might as well be listening to audio rather than watching the TV series. I’ve also tried watching it on my iPhone with full battery and full screen brightness, and it’s still futile.”

TVLine asked showrunner Graham Yost about the complaints, and he said “Listen, I’m not going to defend it. It’s just the way it plays. And sometimes stuff looks one way in a dark editing room. When we showed the first episode on a big screen in London, it looked fantastic, because motion picture screens are very bright. So I just encourage everyone to crank up the brightness [on your TV], and you’ll see a difference.”

A brighter look for Silo in season 3

More than that, there’s hope for the future. Yost promised that parts of Silo season three will be brightly lit and easy to see.

“We will be outdoors, and we will be in the world, and there will be sunshine,” he said.

Without spoilers, the upcoming episodes will take a look back at the histories of the silos that form the backdrop of the Apple TV+ series. The show unwinds the clock 300 years to our near future, which means the episodes won‘t all be set underground.

Yost did emphasize that the series isn’t abandoning the silos, though.

More about the hit series

Apple’s official description of the sci-fi show says:

Silo is the story of the last ten thousand people on Earth, their mile-deep home protecting them from the toxic and deadly world outside. However, no one knows when or why the silo was built, and those who try to find out face fatal consequences. Rebecca Ferguson stars as Juliette, an engineer who seeks answers about a loved one’s murder and tumbles onto a mystery that goes far deeper than she could have ever imagined, leading her to discover that if the lies don’t kill you, the truth will.

Subscribers can enjoy all 10 episodes of Silo season two now — the season two finale aired Friday.

And there’ll be plenty more to enjoy in the future. Apple recently committed to Silo seasons three and four so the show can complete its story arc.
