While Apple reportedly readies its first foldable iPhone for 2026, Samsung is aiming higher. On Tuesday, the company unveiled its first multifolding device, the aptly named Galaxy Z TriFold.
“Through years of innovation in foldable form factors, Galaxy Z TriFold solves one of the mobile industry’s longest-standing challenges — delivering the perfect balance between portability, premium performance and productivity all in one device. Galaxy Z TriFold now expands the boundaries of what’s possible for mobile work, creativity and connection,” said Samsung’s mobile division CEO TM Roh.
The innovative handset comes at an eye-watering price, though.
Galaxy Z TriFold: Three screens, not three folds
Samsung pioneered the foldable smartphone market, with its Galaxy Z and Flip lineup leading the way. Now, the company is again redefining the segment with the Galaxy Z TriFold.
Despite what the name indicates, this is a dual-folding device with three displays. It uses an inward-folding design that unfolds twice to transform from a phone into a tablet with a 10-inch display. Samsung says it has “precisely engineered” the Armor FlexHinge for easy opening and closing. There’s also an auto-alarm function that will alert users if they try to fold the device the wrong way.
When fully unfolded, the Galaxy Z TriFold measures 3.9mm at its thinnest point. Yet it packs high-end hardware, including a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, a 200MP primary camera and a 5,600mAh battery.
Samsung says it placed the three-cell battery in each of the three folding panels for balanced weight distribution and power delivery.
The star of the show, the 10-inch folding screen, uses a new display technology that allows it to fold twice and convert into a pocketable phone. For improved durability, the shock-absorbing display layer features a reinforced overcoat.
To take full advantage of the extra screen space, Samsung will allow users to run up to three Android apps side by side.
High-end internals … and a price to match
Besides the inner 10-inch folding display, the Z TriFold features a 6.7-inch 120Hz AMOLED cover screen. It can hit a peak brightness of 2,600 nits, while the internal display can reach 1,600 nits.
Other specs include 10MP 3x optical and 12MP ultrawide rear cameras, and 10MP f/2.2 selfie cameras on both the cover and the main screen. The trifold device will come in two storage configurations (512GB and 1TB) with 16GB RAM as standard.
The Galaxy Z TriFold launches in South Korea on December 12. Samsung set the price in its home country at 3.59 million won — a whopping $2,450 in U.S. dollars.
Availability will later expand to China, Taiwan, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and the United States in the coming months.
