The iPod Classic is dead.
After serving faithfully in the iPod lineup since 2009, the iPod Classic and its iconic click-wheel interface have finally gotten the ax. Along with redesigning the Apple website and adding an Apple Watch page, Apple has removed the iPod Classic from the iPod section of its site.
We knew this day was coming for years, and what better way to give the old iPod the boot than right as the sexy new smartwatch is walking through the doors at Apple’s campus.
Fare thee well, oh click wheel. Fare thee well.

iphone 6 to launch on 26th september in india (written on http://www.apple.in site) O.o
this is BS! They don’t want people to enjoy the massive amounts of media that we have accumulated on our iTunes over the years with one device. So they remove the only device that has the most GB per $ and replace it with what? A watch no one wants or even needs!
No; I totally agree with that. I want, I need, a dedicated, large capacity music player.

What’s the alternative strategy for accessing large music collections now?
128GB iPhone + free 20,000 songs (40-50GB) on google play music should fill the gap just fine.
Not everyone has unlimited data.
Noooooo! How else to easily carry my entire media library? I use two! the cloud is not a solution.
I don’t get this. Why do you need to carry 160GB (320GB if you use two?) of music around.. Why? You cannot listen to it all before getting back to base for a re-sync, you cannot even be serious about needing that much ‘choice’ when you are out and about. What a load of BS.Where are you, on the fucking space station? (even then, you have 337 days of music listening at 16 hours a day).
Stop fucking whinging and learn how to set up smart playlists.
Clearly, you don’t consume music like I, and many others, do. I don’t want to and often can’t constantly resync, which also has it’s own time and frustration issues, and I have many smart playlists as well as about a thousand constructed ones for different occasions. I particularly use a lot of video playlists, which require such a large hard drive. For a variety of events, personal and professional, I do need to have access to the entire library on the fly, and not just the few playlists which can sec to the phone. The video library isn’t covered by iTunes match, and even in the Bay Area, wifi is usually unavailable where I need it, and even then unreliable for consistent audio or video play. The reason I use two is that one is a dedicated video media server, and the other is all music, music videos, and back tracks.
With the iPod Classic I don’t a laptop and external drives. I have everything I need, self-contained, smaller than a deck of cards, and plug and play AV with cables that fit in my pocket. And iPod touch would be fine for smaller, limited tasks, but also requires constant attention and time-suck.
One doesn’t have to be on the space station to be away from wifi or desktops, just one the road.
I can’t believe these comments. They now offer a 128GB phone. As soon as the flash based players jumped over 100GB you knew the classic was dead. No way they were going to keep a 30pin dock connector device around.
Yeah not the same thing. The 160GB held 160GB of music. Our phones’ drives are comprised of apps, photos, documents, etc. No one is walking around with 50+ GB of music.
Been looking forward to that 128GB iPhone for far too long. I could easily fill it with 50+GB of music, considering my current iPhone has 39GB on it that was chosen carefully.
A mistake I think. I’m hanging onto mine.
I think you mean “click-wheel”, not “dick-wheel”
I love the iPod Classic!
I think it’s time I leave apple behind. My ipod classic broke and I need to find a device that carries 160gb
I’m sure ebay is ripe with inexpensive ones.
*rife
But that’s not the word I’d use to mean full of or abundant.
Why should I have to throw away a perfectly good ipod, that cost me 300+ 6 years ago, has massive memory with all my favorites on it? Oh thats right we are wasteful society, and Apple is a money hoard, iTunes is a leach. I will still proudly stand by my classic.
The question was directed at someone who said:
I have had my iPod Classic for almost six years. I refuse to part with it. What Apple needs to do is fix that damn iTunes. Recent updates have made it impossible for me to download my podcasts via the refresh button.
I love my iPod Classic (120 GB). I’m ok with moving on to the iPod Touch, but the 64 GB size is simply too small for all my music (and the apps I’d carry over from my iPad Air).
I get that many people leave their music in the cloud, hell I do (iTunes Match), but when I want to listen to my iPod in the car, walking, etc… I don’t want to use bandwidth, I want that music on my device.
Refurbs will likely be available online from the Apple Store for some time.
So, don’t break your ipod? Mine (not sure what model, but OLD — no touch screen, got it for Christmas in 2005) was in the glove box when my car got totalled and still works fine. If they stop syncing it with itunes, then come talk to me.
I’ll pass on this and keep my Nano!
