Review: Alfred Powerpack Packs Some Punch

I grabbed myself the Alfred Powerpack over the weekend, and so far it’s looking very promising.

Alfred, you may remember, is a fast little app launcher, web searcher and doing-stuffer for OS X. Clearly inspired by the likes of Quicksilver, it offers basic features for free and now, with the Powerpack, adds a few extras for a fee.

Right now those extras are navigating the file system, controlling iTunes, and performing actions on found files. The Powerpack is only available to users of the pre-release version of the core application, so getting hold of it is a little fiddly – you have to open the Alfred prefs, go to the General pane, open the Updates tab, and tick the “I want pre-releases” checkbox; then do an update to get the most recent version; then buy and activate the Powerpack.

My first impressions are good, though, and I’m particularly keen to see what features are added to later versions of the Powerpack (clipboard history and Applescript actions are among those promised).

I don’t think the Powerpack is ready for everyone yet, not least because it’s so tricky to get hold of. But I don’t think it will be long before it’s a recommended upgrade.
