Although we won’t know for certain how many iPad 2 tablets were sold this weekend until Apple releases actual figures, that hasn’t stopped a patchwork of estimates and insider reports. The latest metric coming to us is that 7,200 of the next-generation devices were sold Friday at the Cupertino, Calif. company’s New York City flagship store, the first day the iPad was available.
While the report cites a “well-connected source,” the numbers seem to echo a statement on weekend iPad 2 consumer demand. Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster and his team found 1,109 people were lined-up at the Fifth Avenue Apple Store this weekend – up from 703 when the original iPad was released in 2010.
In addition, despite measures to reduce lack of inventory and a wider availability, Apple reportedly has stretched the waiting time for iPad 2 to one month. Electronics retail giant Best Buy also announced it sold out of its iPad 2 inventory (including accessories) in just 10 minutes.

that’s a big number…but they could have sold many more if they just had the stock!
7,000 doesn’t sound like much considering the overall estimates of 500,000 to 1,000,000 ipads in one weekend. That would be less than 1.5% of total sales for the weekend for a flagship store in the biggest city of the country.
it doesn’t sound like a lot but..it is. i am not sure how many of that million they sold online, but that is a huge number for 1 day in 1 store – they rang that register 7200 times for just that one item, likely from 5pm to 7 or 8pm?.
best buy, target, att & verizon probably had MUCH lower stock of the item and most Apple stores (in smaller population areas) may have only had a few hundred in stock. if there are 250 Apple Stores in the U.S (there are 300 worldwide) how many do you think each store sold on average?
I love all these articles trying to make it sound like Apple was too stupid etc to make enough.
18 Skus. Even if they doubled their lines from last year, with that many models it means yeah they are going to run out. Plus those reports of 4-5 weeks are online only. You can bet that probably 60-70% of units (if not more like 80-90%) are going to stores. And who knows how many online orders there have been. But it is likely not 5 of each a day. I’m guessing more like 50+ of each an hour. So given that these are assembled by people they don’t want rushing and making mistakes and delivering F’d up units, it is going to take some time.
But in the end, this is for many a toy. Compared to the folks in say Japan that need water, food, shelter, medicine, is it really worth the yelling and screaming about having to wait. No, not really
About perhaps 10 of the stores have the size to come even close to 5th Ave but they probably topped at say 3k. And to be conservative, lets say that 5th Ave was only 3k on day two.
The rest of the stores maybe 500. that’s a day for those three days. Given reports of outages, lets drop Sunday as no stock company wide.
That’s 10200+60000+239000=309,200 for Apple Stores only for two days. Not so shabby. Add in online which probably matched at least 1:1 plus all the ATT/Verizon/Best Buy etc and it is possible that they hit 1 million in two days. Which lines still happening to try to get stock when it comes in.
I think the 500 per store is high. The Rockaway NJ store had 130 on Friday and received another 15 on Sunday. As far as I know, no additional supplies since then. That said, I do agree that the majority were sold online
