If you were to design a movie camera to be shown in a feature film, not to actually shoot it, it might look something like the new B&W Epic-M. But Red’s latest body isn’t just a prop. Neither is it cheap, but even at $47,000, it’s still a bargain.
The Epic-M is a monochrome variant of the Epic, used by the like of David Fincher to shoot big-budget Hollywood movies. It has a 5K sensor, can capture up to 120 frames per second at full-res and outputs footage perfectly suited to post-processing.
The M is a black and white-only version, with the colored filters removed from the sensor to increase light sensitivity and tonal range, as well as allowing much better quality B&W video. The base ISO is 2,000, which means that you don’t need a whole mess of big ugly lights on set, either. Well, less of them anyway.
The rest of the M is Epic-standard, and it’ll work with all your existing accessories. You can pick up the brain only for just $42,000, and Canon and Nikon-ready variants can be had for $46,450 each. A veritable bargain, I think you’ll agree.
