Pioneer Electronics’ new Sphera device is the first aftermarket in-dash receiver that supports Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio playback through Apple CarPlay, the company said Monday at CES 2026. The device makes immersive audio technology accessible to drivers whose vehicles lack factory-installed Atmos systems.

“For over 80 years, Pioneer has achieved many technological ‘firsts’ — from the world’s first car CD player to the first aftermarket CarPlay integration,” said Chris Ono, the company’s CEO and chairman. “Sphera is the next bold chapter in that legacy. We developed a product that brings the rich, detailed sound of Dolby Atmos that moves the soul, to a solution that can be installed in many vehicles on the road today.”

Pioneer Sphera CarPlay receiver brings Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio

Until now, Dolby Atmos playback in vehicles has been limited to new cars with compatible audio hardware from the factory. While Apple has supported Spatial Audio across iPhones, iPads, Macs, AirPods and Apple Music since 2021, bringing that same experience to cars has required purchasing one of a small number of high-end vehicles equipped with specialized sound systems. Now Pioneer delivers it in a portable CarPlay receiver you can keep in your vehicle.

And Pioneer designed Sphera for universal aftermarket installation. So it can be fitted to a wide variety of vehicles without extensive modification. So this isn’t just a CarPlay receiver, it’s a CarPlay receiver that brings some level of immersive Spatial Audio regardless of your car’s audio system.

How Sphera works with existing speakers

Rather than requiring specialized speakers or extensive audio system modifications, Sphera uses an optimized four-channel configuration that works with a vehicle’s existing front and rear speakers. Pioneer’s proprietary Pure Autotuning technology automatically calibrates the system to account for different vehicle interiors’ varying acoustics. It adjusts time alignment, frequency response and channel levels to create what the company calls an “acoustic center position” for the listener.

The calibration process addresses the acoustic challenges inherent in vehicle cabins. They vary widely in size, shape and materials. The technology aims to deliver Spatial Audio that remains true to the creative intent of musicians and content creators — even without dedicated Atmos hardware.

Features and availability

The receiver includes a 10.1-inch HD capacitive touchscreen with Pioneer’s Quick Swipe interface for easy navigation while driving. A split-screen mode allows drivers to keep navigation visible while accessing audio controls and other functions. The unit supports wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity.

Sphera also features Pioneer’s Luminous Bar. It’s a customizable lighting element that can sync with music playback or provide visual cues for navigation.

Using the receiver, drivers can stream Dolby Atmos content from compatible services through CarPlay. That includes Spatial Audio music, audiobooks and podcasts from Apple Music and other supported platforms.

The company says the receiver will be available starting in spring 2026, with pricing beginning at $1,300.
