Nikon just announced a new range of mirrorless compact cameras under the name “1“.

This is a whole new camera system, with a new (pretty small) sensor and a new lens mount (called, um, “1 mount”). There are two models, the 1 V1 and the 1 J1. The V1 is slightly more advanced and comes with a built-in electronic viewfinder. The J1 looks like a standard point-and-shoot, and comes in a variety of colors, including bright pink. And you can get matching lenses.

Features include something called Smart Photo Selector – here’s how Nikon describes it: “You just press the shutter once and, utilising the pre and post capture technology, the camera starts to take the pictures before you’ve even fully depressed the button.” Blimey.

They come with a range of lenses, and there’ll be an adaptor for connecting Nikon’s F-mount DSLR lenses. What sort of results you’ll get from that remain to be seen. The cameras will be on sale in October, for about $650.

Existing Micro 4/3rds cameras from Olympus and Panasonic are generally cheaper than that, so Nikon’s got its work cut out proving that these things are worth the money. They look cute, true: but looks aren’t everything. What do you make of them?

Read an article recently on the Pros/Cons regarding mirror less cameras. The tech is still in it’s infancy and like the digital camera will improve over time. But for now I’ll stick with my Nikon D90. I still prefer my glass viewfinder and not too keen on the electronic viewfinder at this point.

Nikon has always been about it’s lens system (and metering). The fact that this compact can mount a F mount lens peaks my interest. We’ll see if Nikon includes a manual mode so we can use the unbreakable AI-S lenses from the 80’s.

wooow unbelievable it I just got a 827.89 iPad2 for only 103.37 and my mom got a 1499.99 HTV for only 251.92, they are both coming tomorrow bu USPS. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prîces at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HTV to my boss for 600 that I only paid  78.24 for. I use http://jmb.tw/52bf

I know it’s a (ridiculously) profitable business model, but I wish these camera makers would quit adding more useless technology to their cameras and just cut the prices.  A 6MP Nikon D40 for 250 bucks is a lot better camera than any of their P&S models that cost more than that.  AND it’s a better value than the 3000 at 500 bucks.

If they want to charge 500 bucks for a camera it should at least have a full 35mm-size sensor.  They’re still using PoS sensors barely better than the ones in disposable CVS digital cameras. More pixels doesn’t mean better, in fact there’s a point of diminishing returns.  If they’re charging more for these digital models than they did for the old F-Series film cameras, they should make them with comparable quality components.  Let’s face it, even the best of these “prosumer” models are, at best, a $100 digital camera stuffed into a $200 camera body.

Macs users own and use cameras too. The right camera makes a great Mac accessory. Personally I like my Canon G12.
