MPlayerX Could Be the Best Mac Video Player Ever [Daily Freebie]

By

mplayerx

If you haven’t downloaded free MPlayerX yet, do it now. The newish player (it;s been around for just over a year) is the perfect balance between simplicity and performance. It’s the player QuickTime should have been — it’s simple, it’s pretty and it plays absolutely anything you throw at it. It has features like multitouch control via a trackpad that allows you to not only jog control — in a way that makes QuickTime seem awkward and clumsy — but also control volume. Here’s a full list of features from the app’s Mac App Store page:

• Play almost any format of file or stream.

• Multi-touch. Control the player with your fingers.

• Intelligently detecting the encoding of the subtitles. No need for encoding conversion.

• Direct pass through. Connect, play, enjoy your home theater.

• Multi-monitor support. Wanna work while watching your collection? just drag and F.

• Apple Remote support. Watch your favorites in sofa, more comfortable.

• Automatically find the next episode. Enjoy the whole afternoon, with just one click.

• Forget where you stopped playing last time? MPlayerX won’t.

Ok, I love MPlayerX too but if I use it as my default player for all videos I cant see thumbnails of my videos anymore, just an MPlayerX Logo…????

  2. ??????? ??????? says:

Well, that’s normal, cause QuickLook isn’t supposed to work with 3r party programs.

  3. Clayton Zimmerman says:

It might need a new name, but it sounds pretty good. I’ll check it out if VLC can’t play something.

  4. Luis Felipe García Acha says:

I have one question? why should i switch from VLC to MPlayerX? What does it make it better than VLC? Thanks in advance.

  5. Son1ze says:

Prefer Movist over either VLC or MPlayerX. Another option.

No bright orange and white construction cone? lol. I just switched myself. Seems much more stable and clean. Plus for better or worse its in the Mac App Store. Oh and the icon isn’t ORANGE AND WHITE

  7. Luis Felipe García Acha says:

oh, thanks, i’ll give it a try. I also will try Movist. Any thought about that one?

  8. Miguel_a says:

Just on Mac App Store? I pass.

  9. Zack Meltzer says:

Haven’t used it in awhile. My understanding is that VLC and Movist are cousins in code. Just found a new cool feature on mplayerx tho. not only can you make it quit when you exit every time, but it also will remember where you stopped playing and will resume where you left off. Now THAT is a feature vlc doesn’t have (as far as I know)

  10. Dilbert A says:

you can get it outside of the MAS.

From where? On their site there just seems to be a link to the app store only.

  12. Joelj says:

Whats the big deal abut going to the mac app store to get it?

I’ve been using MPlayerX since it’s debut in the Mac App Store. After just 15 minutes of use, I quickly deleted VLC. For some reason, I never liked VLC at all.

  14. Pete says:

Well, in my case it’s because as well as my MBP I’d also like to install it on a PPC that’s still running Leopard. I *guess* the author has only put out an Intel build since it’s only available in the App store but that’s a pity, not least since mplayer itself works without issue on PPCs (although MPlayer OSX Extended crashes whenever I try and play anything with it — hence looking for an alternative). I might try compiling it up from source instead.

  15. Alex says:

If you really hate the app store for whatever reason try
    http://code.google.com/p/mplay
you can download the application bundle straight from there. (Or you can grab the source code from the main website and compile it up yourself.)

  16. Matt Urgo says:

If it does MKV and AVIs well then I’ll give it a try, it certainly has a sexier interface then VLC.

  17. Matt Urgo says:

Why don’t you like the Mac App store?

  18. Nick Tassone says:

that sounds like a reason for switching right there.

  23. kuryack says:

  24. Penilim says:
